Popeye has semi garbled graphics while punching and getting hit.

I have a Popeye that has semi garbled graphics while punching and getting hit by bottles or Bluto. I tried to re-seat all of the removable chips but that didn't help. Does anybody know what I could check next?

There could be several issues, but this is what I would suspect:

Bad sprite RAM or VRAM.
Corrupt EPROM

Thanks for the tip, when I go into test mod it says all of the RAM is ok but it completely skips the ROM test. I have a High score save kit installed but I don't think that should matter.

It sounds like a corrupt ROM. Since you have an EPROM programmer - here's a neat trick. Read your EPROMs into the computer and use RomIdent to check them. It'll checksum the ROM image and compare it to known checksums. If it comes up with Popeye, then the ROM is good. If it can't find it... then the ROM is corrupt. Burn a replacement.

This can be done with mame as well. Put your read image files in your mame directory, open a command prompt, and do "mame yourfile.bin -romident"

I've checked 8 of the 14 roms according to the revision D MAME set I'm comparing it too. I tested the 2764's and one of them (7e) came back with no information in romident. I burned a different one with the info from the MAME file. It burned fine but when I tested the game the problem is still there. The other 6 chips are different types so I'm reading up on what type they are to set my burner accordingly.

I have tried this but when I type that command " mame 7e.bin -romident" it just jumps down to the next line with no information. I'm quite sure I'm doing something wrong though.

Did you read your new 7e back in and check it against romident?

The only other ROM you should worry about is 5n. The others are small color proms and whatnot, not EPROMs.

Yes. I did read it and then tested it in romident, it did come back as Popeye 7e. I Started to test 5n but then realized I didn't know what type of chip it was.

Then I thought maybe the glitch was in my head so tried it in MAME and I don't see the glitch so at least I'm not crazy! :)

Well, you need to cd to your mame directory first.. for starters. I dunno what to recommend if you've already done that -- mame filename.bin -romident works fine for me.. should come back with NO MATCH if the image is bad.

5n comes back good in romident. Do you think the high score save kit would have anything to do with it?

edit...I guess I could remove it and see what happens. Duh!!

If the Popeye high save kit is anything like the DK/DKJr kits, the game roms are on the HSS kit themselves and the game roms on the CPU board are bypassed...
