POLL: Battleworn Sinistar

This is my battleworn, original upright Sinistar cabinet. Today brought into the house (and soon to be in the basement arcade) from "long-term" storage in the garage.

Simple POLL Question: Keep the patina or not? Y/N (discuss)

I have one in similar shape, got to at least seal it if you keep it like that.

i'd keep it the way it is. graphics are still very clear, colors are vibrant, there's no question what game it originally was (and will continue to be)

if half the graphics were missing or trashed by operator conversion game side art application, cabinet was severely beaten/damaged, etc then perhaps a different story

Just depends on how much time you want to put into it. Mine has a little on one side, but you can't see it in the arcade. I don't know why I keep playing it when it kicks my ass every time.

I'd keep it, especially if it's going to be in a line of games where you can't see much of the sideart anyway.

I passed on a Wizard of War for a trade a couple of years ago that was scratched up like that. Still kinda regret it.

I'd touch up the black its easy to match up and would make a pretty big difference

For those playing along ... the game is now in the basement.
Why is that of significant importance? Well, once they go down there, they don't come back up. LOL

The marquee is nice.
The glass bezel is nice.
The CPO is nice (original) and complete but has some cracks appearing.
The kickplate could use some attention. So that might be sanded down and repainted.
So, from the front, it will be very presentable.

You made the right call. Give the sides some carnuba wax and get to playing. Run the OG boards until you can't.

Yeah, I'm with Gleek. Run the original boards until they croak, then switch (or fix them, whatever).

An original cabinet with historic patina deserves to keep running with original WMS boards. I agree.

I cleaned up the front and it looks surprisingly good.

Mine looks like that...I left the side art that way, and replaced all of the missing stuff with new (control panel AND overlay, since the operator had hacked up some kind of DIY panel with a Contra overlay on it, marquee, and acrylic bezel from Szabo since it was the only one available). Mine's also rocking a JROK since it didn't have the original boards.

I'd roll the sides with the cheapest black latex you can find and slap a 60-1 in there. Easy upgrade.

That's where I'm at. Get the right black (flat, gloss, eggshell) and a foam brush and some blue or green painters tape, and touch up the black. It will hide all that rash.

If the damage was just in the black then I would touch it up. But on that one I think it would look weird. There's wear all over. That game has a story to tell. Don't try to erase history. Not everything needs to be "restored". If you don't like looking at it, just put the game between two others.

Original boards for sure. The Sinistar speech is not loud enough, at least on my JROK.

LOL ... dare to ask me how many sets of WMS boardsets I own? The benefit of being in this hobby for well over 30 years.

When I moved the game I found two extra PCBs (CPU and ROM) in antistatic bags sitting at the bottom of the cab. Not sure if those work or not.
