911

it was at a customers house, was working and complete, although did not have a mat
i think it has the dongle in.
and it doing the above symtom still, just says no signal, conversion fail

911

i have only just opened the back of game this one time,
is the dongle that round thing on the side of the pcb, or is it the card insert?

We really need a FAQ for this stuff.

Does it play blind? (That is, after you let it sit on for a few minutes, does it make the correct noises when you give it a coin?)

YES: Make sure that the video connection from the computer/PCB to the monitor is hooked up correctly and secure. Try the monitor with a different game (this can be a bit complicated -- what do you have?).

NO: Computer isn't starting for some reason. 90% chance your monitor is fine. Check the input and output voltages on the power supply and inspect the cabinet for loose connections.

FWIW, I've seen two different Mocap Boxing machines (same hardware, same cabinet, probably has other similarities too) show "NO SIGNAL" but you can see a desynced image rolling around behind it. Then it'll go away, but come back later. Might be a common issue with these games. Worth a try to just leave it running and see if it comes up.

And you don't tell us where you're located. What, are you gonna ship it to the buyer?

Conversion failed is that.... failed. Wont boot or play blind. If its missing the correct dongle it can be converted back to original police 911 with rtc and cf. Your sync message is monitor on with the pcb in its reboot during hardware errors.

911/2

re seated dongle and flash card, no change in symtoms, still says conversion failed, then no signal

I know this is an old post, but this is one of the few posts about this problem, and I just ran into this problem on my Police 911/2. In most cases, I'd guess it means the Timekeeper RTC battery is dead.

AFAIK, the Police 911/2 Timekeeper hasn't been dumped... BUT, luckily in my case (and in whoever got r5g's case probably), the game was an upgraded Police 911 -> Police 911/2, which means you can start with the Police 911 Timekeeper, which is dumped, and the game will upgrade it to Police 911/2 (it will say "Conversion Succeed"). I don't know whether dedicated Police 911/2 boards will also perform the upgrade if you start with a Police 911 RTC. I also don't know whether the upgraded Timekeeper data will work on a dedicated Police 911/2, or just an upgrade (my guess is both)... but I'll be submitting the dump to MAME either way (drop me a PM if you need the dump before it shows up in the MAME sets).

Fantastic info.
What is the hardware that is the timekeeper, an EPROM of some sort?

The Timekeeper is basically just a battery backed NVRAM module, except it also has a crystal and RTC (mapped to the last 8 or so bytes of the RAM). Basically, Konami programmed them at the factory, and when the battery dies, it loses the factory programming and turns the PCB into a brick.

I didn't feel like waiting for a replacement to arrive... plus a replacement is ~$20 (plus shipping), so I just took wire cutters and busted open the top of the case, cut out the old battery from the epoxy, and soldered in a battery holder. You have to be careful, since the crystal is also in the epoxy. I'll probably just order a replacement next time I order something from Digikey (or maybe request a couple free samples from ST), but this will hold me over until then.

So the way I understand it, if mine is still working, I can read it and write it back to another one?

Yep... though the chip isn't socketed, so you'll need to desolder it to dump it. :-/
