I naively played with my perfectly good Police 911 2 CF today in that I read and wrote files to it, without realizing the consequences of doing so. It bricked my game; no boot, 2 static LEDs. I understand from hunting around that I may have corrupted some sort of protection on the CF. Can someone please help me get it working again? 😭

There isn't any protection on the CF card, but you certainly could have corrupted something. The easiest thing to do is simply download the Police 911 2 MAME chd and extract it to the card. Since you plugged it into the PC, I guess you already have the card reader.

There are instructions on extracting a chd to CF here: https://www.thekillerinstinctproject.com/kiproject/chdman.html .

Just a follow up and for anyone that might benefit from this info later:

Using CHDMAN 0.146, I got an "Error writing to file; check disk space" on the original CF card (64MB).

chdman extracthd -i b11a02.chd -o \\.\PHYSICALDRIVE3 -f

I bought a 4GB CF, and got the same error.

After reading this thread (https://forums.arcade-museum.com/threads/chd-size.400345/), I tried deleting the partition on the 4GB CF using Disk Management (right-click, Delete Volume). This allowed extraction of the CHD file to work. However, the game would still not boot (black screen, ~2-3 LEDs depending on which slot I used).

I then deleted the partition on the original 64MB CF and successfully extracted the CHD again. This worked! And the MAME file matched my RTC, so no other tinkering was needed and my high scores were preserved.
