Pole position test harness to jamma test rig adaptions?

I have been working on benching pole position boards so I can attempt to fix some of the sets I have. ( I know I know )

Anyway I have the interconnect board in the back under control. I am making a harness out of that board so I can run both boards at the same time apart from each other.

Now the time has come to ask some questions about the main edge connectors on both boards. I have a spare pole position harness that has been hacked up a bit. So I am gonna cut off both connectors with as much wire as possible.

Now can I run both pole position boards if I solder both harness's from the two factory edge connectors to a jamma finger board? Then of-course plug that custom fingerboard into the jamma test station. Will this work out ok?

Does anyone know what would be the pin out to get everything working? I am also wondering about the sound issues and all the different controls. Could I drive the game with buttons & a joystick for gas, shifting, steering ect ect? What would be the best way to pull off the controls including test mode?

Any info on pulling this off would be awesome... Thanks

i have a test rig setup for namco versions and will make a similar setup for atari versions , but, the steering requires quadrature encoding inputs so i'd suggest getting yourself a spare steering wheel for that part only.

the rest can be done with buttons and some pots. if you are capable of hacking together a small quadrature encoding circuit then you could use a jamma harness with a joystick such that the quadrature circuit would send the quadrature encoded signals depending on which js switch is closed.

accelerator is a pot too. check the diagram, 5k iirc? you could setup the accell function as a two or three speed by using different resistance values connected to each button

i made my quadrature encoder from an old serial mouse encoder, had to wire up slightly differently to get it to work.

so in short, jamma could be made to work, but only if you add a few circuits between the game board and the jamma harness to emulate the steering function, accell function and brake (cant remember if that was a pot or just a switch)

Thanks for the posts guys... You both sure gave me a lot to think about.

Steering is a major concern and I love the trackball/spinner solution to keep it small.

This really is a tough set of boards to put on the bench.
 
Trackball or arkanoid or tempest spinner are smaller :)

Biggest issue is an external sound amp...

hm hadnt thought of using a spinner or trkbl but i didnt have one anyway so had to use the mouse!

can the audio line in on a domestic amp, cd player etc be used as the amp with the atari boards ?
 
I am starting to wonder if I can fit a really small sound amp into my jamma test rig with an on off switch. I have a very limited amount of room on the side in the back by the iso.

Would the iso mess with an amp or the other way around?

That would solve the problem with the pp boards and maybe some other boards down the line as well.

Well I finally have some decent shots of the first machine out of three.

I took some extra time so I would have some shots of the wheel encoder and the pot on the gas pedal. The shifter looks like a regular switch to me.

Anyway I still have two more machines to take pictures of before I can start swapping parts around and hacking up crap on one of the machines.

Riptor also hooked me with some goodies for this project and others. I don't think I have everything yet but I am getting close.

I swear from the pictures that I might be able to take a hack saw to one of the extra steering wheels and cut it off. Then find some sort of knob for lower part of the steering setup. Then slap that whole lower assy with the encoder in a project box with 1 pot and one switch.

If all that works out ok I can start on the sound amp. Hell I might get lucky and have enough room for the amp in that project box.

Any other ideas now that we have pictures?
