I am finally getting around to setting up a test/repair bench in my new house. In addition to jamma I want to specifically support pole position (because I have a bunch of pole position boards).

Do I actually need to use AR II boards or can I just wire it up to a switching power supply? Don't need audio support on the test bench.

Do most of you guys actually hook things up to test the controls on the bench or do you just hook up power and video?

The later for both. I only use switching power supply for both benches and also only hook up video/audio and power to the board.

I have plans to build a new one with a PC joystick port so I can actually play the games if needed but it's on the bottom of the project list at the moment. ;)

When I first start on Pole Position/Pole Position II boards......I just supply power and video. Once I get it booting up properly......and if I have an actual game in the shop.......I transfer the boards to the game and test audio and I/O. If I don't have an actual game.....I then test those functions on the bench. My bench is small and the extra crap for testing audio and I/O takes up too much space.....thus is why I test/fix those last. I actually use A/R IIs for power.

I made a couple of pig tail to spade lug connectors, and attached +5v and Gnd to the test points on the board.. I also connected the video to the videi test points.

If they arent booting, look for a bad trace under the battery. Several Ive fixed have been a corroded trace there.
