Anybody cover their Pole Position steering wheel with any type of grip tape or some kind of wrap to cover up missing chunks or the degrading sticky rubber. I would think a car steering wheel cover would be too big for a solution.

I have thought about taking a wheel to an automotive upholstery shop, but never managed to do it. Would love to see if anyone has an ideas.

degrading sticky rubber.

Oh...... so THAT's what I've been trying to clean off of mine. Must have been melted pretty bad in the fire. I've pretty much got it down to bare plastic, now.... and have had no issues with it like that.

I have a spare Pole Position wheel and was toying with the idea of sending out to get wrapped in alcantara. Something like this:

One thing of note may be the gameplay. For instance I fling the wheel in the hairpin and let it slide through my hand and catch it at just the right moment to correct course. I wonder if that will be possible with materials that contain more grip.

Do they still make those old school steering wheel covers? The kind that are black vinyl with the holes in it and that you wrap with a vinyl "string"?

If so, you could cut one of those to the right size, slightly overlap the ends, and wrap it tight with the string. I remember seeing a driving game done up like that years ago. I don't remember if it was PP, but it seemed to work fine...

My Pole Position steering wheel is a hard smooth plastic that slides right through you hand when you spin it hard. I don't see how it could ever be sticky.

Mine is the same except it tends to get a bit sticky no matter how much you clean it - I think it's just the way the plastic deteriorates.

Mine survived a fire, I figured the stickiness was created during that, as I don't remember it being that way back in '84. But that was literally decades ago, so I could be wrong about another coating on it. I cleaned it as best I could, but it still has a little of that tacky feeling to it.

I think everyone does the "spin............ Grab" at the hairpin turn.

I just took off my 2 steering wheels off a 2 player Super Off Road this weekend because I want to send them somewhere to get dipped. I just put rubber dip in Google and a few links that looked promising came up, one that said they did rubber handles. I plan on emailing a few people this week and see who will do a small job like 2 steering wheels and who thinks their products could handle it and send them out hopefully by the end of the week. Right now my wheels are just starting to loose the top layer so before a chunk falls off I want to get them protected. My wheels have a rubber feel to them not a hard plastic like some types so I think on these I should be able to have some kind rubber dip applied and be OK.
