My daughter was playing in the Pole cockpit yesterday and I'll I could hear was skidding. "Turn onto the road" I said. She said "Dad, I can't!" I checked it, and sure enough, the car will only turn right. Went into test mode, same thing. The values only go up, no matter which direction you turn the wheel. Took the opto board off, cleaned it, checked for cold solder joints (there were none) put it back and the same thing. Does this sound opto or board related? Isn't there a site that still sells replacement optos?

Could be either opto or main board, if you have a scope check for pulses on pins 22 & 26, of the 53xx chip at 9K, it is the interface for the steering through two sections of the hex inverter at 8L (4584), you may just need to re-seat the 53xx or the inverter may have failed.

I'll reseat and clean that chip. I do not own a scope. Let me know when you're taking Pole Boards again, I still have that ROM 10 error on my Pole II board, and now this possible steering issue on my Pole I board. If re-seating this chip and swapping the opto out doesn't work, I may have to send you both of them. These were both repaired by you in '07 and '08 respectively. Thanks Dick, I'll report back in a bit my good man.

Might be worth getting a cheap logic probe in the meantime... you'll atleast be able to see if anything is going on there... I rarely use my o-scope minus checking a BZ board and looking at sound issues. Got my logic probe for $7 or so on eBay, worth every penny and more.

OK, swapped chips at 9K with my Pole II board, same issue. I did notice that the socket is lifting off of the pins. It actually moves up and down while the soldered pins stay in place. So at the very least, this needs a new socket.

It is normal for the socket body to move up and down some, doesn't necessarily indicate a bad socket, if any of the pins move up and with the socket body then you have a problem,
I am still doing some Pole I & II repair/exchange, runs $65-75 + shipping, boards need to be complete and in reasonably repairable condition.

Ouch. It seems that over the course of 3 years these boards will have nearly cost me my life savings.

Phet, I have an old unused PP steering/shifter/CP assembly that I'm salvaging to just give Krajkerjac a shifter plastic 'washer' piece from... You want me to grab any PCBs out of it that might help ya? Or is it not in the controls?

Just lemme know. Easy to do. Take pictures, or give me a good description of what you need, it's yours.

Yep, I need the little opto PCB that is attached to the steering wheel base, behind the gears. It is attached by 2 1/4 inch hex screws. If you have that piece, and could send it to me, that would be sweeter than a marshmallow peter. LMK.

Can do, will do. PM me your mailing addy and I'll get that out to you.

It's untested, but looks to be in good shape. And the price is right.

Just paying some karma back. Been getting a lot of help from friends on here lately with little stuff! :)
