Hi Freaks,
my Pole Position is not running yet. I replaced the power supply with an old computer power supply (15A on tne +5V Line). I connected several points on both pcbs to GND and +5V Line. Both pcbs are looking good with no burns. When I turn on the power I get this picture (Hantarex MTC 900).
Anyone an idea where to start ?
For many years I repaired old pinball pcbs, but this is my first Atari pcb.

Thanks for your hints.

This mighty be a silly question but have you tried starting it in the "test" mode?
That might give you an idea what's wrong.

Hi Eric,
thanks for your quick reply.
In test mode I get the same picture. Do you have experience on this pcbs ?

Ok, I have a Pole Position 2 that has a similar problem. Mine will start and sometimes the race will even start and then it just glitches out completely and even though the race/game is still going the grafix are just unuseable.
I think it's a power issue but haven't had a chance to work on it yet.

I fond that I need to start the game in the "test: position to get it to go to it I can't just switch it to "test".

Make surt the interconnect board that connects the two boards at the back of the cardcage is firmly seated. Sometimes pulling it off and re-seating it helps.

Do some searching here you'll find tons of info already posted. Pole Position is a known-dog when it comes to reliability - there's a few things that can be done to improve them but again they're not easy to keep running. Usually in most cases its power issues and/or poor connections that cause the boards to flip out like that.

Hi,
now I am measuring the following: think both Z8002 CPUs where not running. No signals on the BUS.
Am I right that first starts the Z80 and generate both RESET signals RESETA and RESETB for both Z8002 ?

The RESET for the Z80 is pulsing from +5V down to +3V(see Sound CPU schematics) from location 8L (4584). Think that the Z80 is not working too. The pulse come from location 6A (74LS161). Now my question: who makes the Reset pulsing and why ?
Note: the board is on the work bench with exactly +4.98V power supply (it is to less ? may this result the pulsing ?)

Best regards and thanks in advance
Walter

You may want to replace the sockets for the three 40pin ICs (z80 & z8002s) or at least take a close look at them. I had a similar screen on mine at one point and although I did need to replace my z80, both of my z8002 sockets ended up having multiple dead legs.

Hi,
I'am still working on my pcb. Bought an arcade switching power supply to increase the +5V level up to +5.2V : nothing happens, same pic on monitor. I won't push up the voltage to high, I didn't want to have a barbecue board. Want to change at first the two Eproms 2764 and 2732 with the Z80 instructions (sockets are OK, the CPU socket too). Now the question :
I found different MAME ROM Images at www.rom-world.com which one to take for the -.183 and -.180. It is for an PPII from Atari.

Anyone an idea ?

Thanks

I'd start by looking at the backup battery on the CPU board and seeing how much corrosion damage there is.

Clean the damage, replace all affected sockets after cleaning the board under them, check for damaged traces and patch them, then clean the chip legs before putting them in the new sockets.

Hi,
now I fixed my Pole Position II.
Is there a phd ? And who does the graduation Dick ?

The board is only running on the workbench, I have to build it in my cab.
It is the result of hours of working and measuring, the interessting point is: I've got the Atari boards, but on the Starting Screen you can read: by Namco.

Thanks for all hints, special thanks to Dick.
