So I brought home a Pole Position the other day. Tested and worked beautifully. However, it did not enjoy the 15 minute drive home. When I got it in, I first got a RAM error. I reseated the chips and that fixed that, however, now there is no driver sound. All the other sounds (except maybe the explosion) are there, but no driving car sound - which kind of takes away the fun!!

I have done some research into this and have concluded that there are 4 possible outcomes. The manual says to check Eproms at 12E and 12F, and another source I found said to check ( https://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=193521 ) the 7497 at 11C and 12B.

My problem is - is I have no idea where to find these parts! And do you have to order them specially for this game, or do they all act the same and I just buy one and replace it?

Thanks!

12e and 12f can be reseated so start there. After the two of them there are a lot of parts that are known to fail Could be any of them.

these boards are troublesome to work on unless you are setup to do so. Its not fun at all trouble shooting in the cabinet.

I am not 100% sure, but I believe my 12e/f were soldered to the board

Then in that case. You will need to bust out with a logic probe or scope and be able to work on a bench to get it going.

FWIW, I fix these boards if you dont want to mess with it.

I suspect that even if they are bad you would get some sort of sound. I dont think the eproms are the problem.

Just bumping this up! I replaced the two Eproms and nothing happened. Speaker still 'clicks' approximately every 1 second. No driving sounds.

I kinda figured the ROMs were a longshot. Time to start working outward. Could also be an open/broken cap or resistor.

I haven't worked on Pole Positions, but all other Atari boards I repair use LM324's as the audio output amps, and they often go bad.

If they're Signetics brand (with an 'S' logo on them), I'd start by socketing and replacing them, if you don't have the tools to troubleshoot deeper.

Did you ever find a solution to this? I'm having the same issue, sort of. My car makes no sound but everything else is there.
