I finally got off my butt and tinkered with my PP boards... The power supplies are screwed up, so I just used an ATX power supply and ran +5 to the test points on each board, and ground. After playing mix and match with 4 sets of PP boards, I finally got 1 that "works"... I can't tell about audio because I'm only giving +5 and I can't find that friggin' Star Tech article about how to make the sound work... but finally... after I get my Crazy Kong and Route 16 boards sent off for repair... I'll actually have all the games at my house playable.

Granted... I still have a Battle Zone that's not working... but that's not at the house.... so... technicalities for the win!

Anywho, anyone know where I can read that article? PDF? Something?!?

Okay, found an article that works for me... just cut the +5 and +sense lines and used the existing power supplies to get the sound.

Engine sounds work, everything else is missing... Oh well... one step closer.

I might have another CPU board that works... I'll start swapping them around to see what I can get.

Okay, swapped out my CPU boards... I ended up with 2 that worked (RAM errors on the others)... but 1 has JUST engine sounds... the other has all sound EXCEPT for the engine sounds... ... So close...

Tell me what I need to swap around... I'd shot gun it, but my customs on one of the boards don't look so hot and I really don't want to go pissing them off and making them drop legs if I don't need to.

Audio :

-------------- ---------Prom--------------Custom IC------------Ram

voice--------------------9C--------------------9D
Screech/crash--------------------------------9EP
player/engine--------12E/12F
All other sounds------7L/11D------------------------------------7K/7J

NOTHING else has to do with the engine sounds besides the ERPOMs (or PROMs... depended on which board I'm looking at)?

Well... that sucks. I just took off 2 EPROMs, replaced them with PROMs from another board (known good PROMs since that was the board that had no sound BUT engine noise) and I'm still getting nothing... Sockets seemed good, I guess I'll do continuity on all the pins now... sigh...

I'm no expert but as far as I know that's it.. I've had some PP boards eat me alive before, I know what your going through.

Okay, update for anyone interested... I think I'll just keep update'ng until the board is fixed. Could be a long, bumpy ride, folks.

I've pulled, swapped, cleaned, and repaired every custom IC on the board, no change.

I've swapped, cleaned, verified, and reseated 12E and 12F... still no engine sounds.

The explosion sound has stopped working as well... but the tire screech sound still works (both done by the 54XX).

So, I've ruled out the chips themselves... so that's nice. I guess the next step is replacing sockets for effected chips. (12E, 12F, and I guess teh 54XX since it's only doing half it's job).

Could RAM or CPUs cause these errors, or is it safe to assume it's something a little further down the line from the CPUs?

The interconnect board should be good because on my other board engine sounds work (of course, JUST engine sounds, but still...)

Okay, checked everything in the engine sound circuit (my PP supplement manual was missing the good stuff! Had to get these from the web)... the one think that really stuck out to me was all inputs and outputs of the 393 are static (either stuck high, or pegged low, none dead)... no pulsing at all. Same for the EPROMs (12E, 12F), static... zero pulsing.

Should the inputs for the 393 be pulsing (I'm assuming that's one of the last steps between in and the EPROMs from looking at the schematic)
