I have a PPII that works, except for the steering. It will not register anything in the test screen at all. I was able to check the continuity of the wires to the board and thru the optic board. I am wondering if it is either a main board issue or the optic board. I sold the game and told the guy I would get the board checked out and repaired for him. Is there anyone who could test/repair the steering on the main board for me since I no longer have the means to do so?

Two likely culprits. The encoders on the wheel fail, and the Pokey chip on the mainboard that registers the inputs is also prone to failure.

Opto

It is the opto or the board. Make sure your opto is clean, free of dirt and oil. That happens often as well. I have an extra working opto if you need it.

O.k. well I have a replacement opto board now does anyone know a reputable repair guy to look at the board? I have tried to contact Dick Millikan who I got the board from, but he hasn't replied to my PM...

Hello,
I am the one who purchased the pole position. After a good bit of time messing around with it, I am still having steering issues. I purchased a new opto board from fixumdude(michael grugel) on the arcade controls forum. What is strange about the game, If I have the game off all day and get home from work and fire it up, the steering will work for a few minutes. Although it is a bit intermittent, it works. I am new to arcades, this is my first game so all I have really done so far is basic's: cleaned the wheel, new opto board, verified continuity from the opto to the video board ect. Do you think the chip at 9k is my problem.

Thank you for your input

THe custom 52xx chip could cause that problem, it isn't a high mortality item but does fail from time to time, first try re-seating it and if that doesn't help your best bet is to try one from another board (Pole I or II, they use the same chip), sounds like you have checked everything else in that circuit, also could be a bad socket which again doesn't have a high mortality but occasionally does cause problems. The only other parts in that circuit are a few resistors (R127.128 2.2k and R129,130 3.3k) which almost never fail and the inverter at pos 8L, I haven't ever found a bad 8L but could happen, you might also check C31,32 to verify that neither is broken or shorted.

Dick,
Thank you for your input. The only problem is that I have no idea what any of those chips are. I have about 2 weeks experience with arcade games and am giving it my best shot. Is there anyone who could test and/or repair the board or possibly tell me where I can read up on these items, I have searched online but I couldn't find much info. I feel this might be out of my reach with my little knowledge. I am located in Hanover, Pa.

Thank you for your help

Arcade1va I sent you a pm

Had no steering and game stuck in test mode screen.

Swapped the Custom chip 53xx @ 9K with one I had off another board and problem fixed and everything back up and running

The feeling of fixing your own machine as a novice is a great feeling.
