Is there a set of roms I can burn for Pole Position II that doesn't use the custom?

I have what might be an original set of of PPII Boards. My plan is to dump those roms before I do anything. I also have a complete set of roms in hand from mame that I got back in May 2000.

polepos1.zip
polepos2.zip
polepos.zip
poleposa.zip
poleps2a.zip
poleps2b.zip
poleps2c.zip

I have been thinking about this and if the hard drive will still spin up. I might have an even older set from 1998 or so if it was in mame.

Anyway, is it possible that there is a boot set of roms that do not need the custom to run? I would like to convert some sets of boards I have to PPII besides the one I all ready have. I would love to get rid of the custom if possible.

Intel gathered from an older post by Kevin

I have all ready looked thru the roms in hand for...

176-V3.3L
177-V3.4L

Not there but I do have a really old...

poleps2a that contains a "176.3L" and "177.4L

Also I would like to ask about Bob Roberts Notes on the conversion.

These notes seem to have stood the test of time.

Does anyone else know of any other notes on the net about this conversion?

I came up with nothing but Kevin's post over on BYOAC with google.

Thanks!

That is the standard conversion to go from a PP I to a PP II using the PP I boardset.
It's all lined out in the PP II "Enhancement Manual", but Bob's write-up is much easier to follow.

Be sure to note the differences between a "Namco" boardset and an "Atari" boardset.

Which do you have by the way?

Here's the ROMS that I had been messing with during that previous thread.
We were working with an Atari boardset, so would have to look into whether the same ROM files are completely compatible with a Namco boarset.

The three ROM set includes a modified 4K.
So you burn a new 3L and 4L (2764's) and a new 4K (2716).
Worked fine, but seemed we had graphic issues like there were both Namco and Atari signage during gameplay, can't recall all the details. But it will revive a dead game due to IC25 error caused by the 4K IC.

The two ROM set is supposed to do away with the 4K all together.
So you burn a new 3L and 4L (2764's) and leave out the 4K completely.
Seems like we had problems getting this set to run correctly, but once again I don't recall the details. Worth trying again, but I don't have a machine handy at the moment.

There was another "alternative" that included a DM74S287N piggybacked to a 2716 ROM at location 4K, but I haven't really wanted to get into that monstrosity. Needed to see how the contents of the 287 PROM was programmed to see what it had going on. But honestly, I'd just assume stick to using a modified ROM option before going this route.

I have 4 PP1 Atari sets and 1 PP2 Atari Set.

I have a set of rom's from 2000. They are probably the same ones you had back in 09. Hard to say now because you don't have it in front of you. I will dig around for another hard drive I had in 98 and see if I have any older than these. It is in storage I hope because it is not here. I will give a look see tomorrow.

Now you see this is awesome! Thank you for the files! I have a really clean pp1 set that I am going to do this change over on. I have all the new parts & some burners here to attempt this. I hope to give this a run on sunday afternoon. I will certainly post back my results!

I have used the V3 roms in several Pole Pos II boards and haven't noticed any graphics problems, if there are any they must be minor, I have even sent a couple of repaired sets out with V3 roms installed and haven't heard any complaints about them.

Hey are these the same ones that Kevin attached to this thread that you use specifically or is there another version floating around the net still?

Thanks for your time...

It was the V3 ROMS that I never got working quite right for some reason on our actual hardware. (honestly can't recall what they did now)
When you use these, do you NOT have any sort of 4K ROM?

It was the three ROM set with a modified 4K that gave us some unusual graphics. (a mix of Atari and Namco) But otherwise worked fine.

I know you have messed with this sort of thing a lot more than I have...thanks for chiming in.
