I have a Pole position II Ireland cabinet that I've been working on and have come across an inconsistency where there are bolts on this cabinet that are not seen on others.

If you look at the first picture there are four bolt below the control panel and one between the coin door and pedal housing.

All of these bolts have no apparent purpose outside of holding a piece of wood on the other side. But they were obviously factory installed.

I removed them and I'm about to Bondo up the holes and would appreciate any ideas on what they were for.

Thanks.

Security bars.

I can't seem to picture security bars inside the cabinet.

There was a lock bar positioned vertically (over the over/under coin doors) on the outside of the cabinet, That damage was were someone pulled it out from the top.

Thanks.

It is probably a security mod. Look at the front of the cabinet. In stock form you could split the front panel in two with a couple good kicks and take the whole coin door with you. That extra piece of wood makes that a lot harder.

I don't see how that would work.

If I were going to kick it in I'd target the area between the speaker grill and the coin door.

Anyway, if Atari had not have been so cheap when they made their cabinets out of particle board they would not have needed to institute such a weak security measure. (And today the cabinet restoration forum wouldn't have as much traffic). :D

Thanks.

I think the bolts/ board were added to give strength to the edge of the front panel. The CP attaches just above that and the edge is cut particle board, a given weak spot with people pulling/ pushing on the CP.

Here's some pix of my game, hope it helps:

I have two other mysteries.

Your cabinet doesn't appear to have them, but there is a board bolted diagonally to the inside of this cabinet and also what I suspect is an after market 2" x 4" placed horizontally across the back as seen in the foreground of the below pic.

I assumed that they were installed to increase cabinet stability.

Any ideas?

My 720 had the front kicked in at some point, damaging the coin door frame. The thug obviously did this to get at the money. When I bought the project, it came with a fairly well made replacement piece, 5/8" plywood, but the coin door cutout was dead on correct. I used that as a template to make the new front panel.

I would bet that the op that put that security mod wood in the Pole Position had that same thing happen - One of his games probably had the front panel kicked and broken, or at least badly cracked in an attempt to steal money.
