Finally got my PP cockpit running 100% and have been playing. Started out on the test track to get a feeling for the game again, haven't had one in 10 years or so.

Besides the sound differences and such on the test track I qualify easily and do great on the race but haven't gotten past lap 1 yet in the race. Error free qualifying no matter what the best I can get is 7th place to start. I can get extended play on the first lap but can never make a second lap, close and even see the finish but never a continue. So I qualify and make the first lap without hitting any water or anything, full speed all the way, and the second lap the same but still don't make it to the next.

I have to check the dips because I got screwed.

Shenanagins I tell ya!

Yeah, that doesn't sound right... Usually I will get second on the qualifier if I don't crash just being "careful", and if I don't crash during the race I will finish every time. Though that doesn't happen often... I do know the dips make a huge difference. The number of laps and the speed are the big ones. I guess the added time at each lap would be a big factor too... I have mine set to Twin Galaxies rules, when I got my game it was set WAY easier, I was very surpriseed at how much harder it was after I changed it. Presumeably the TG rules are in the middle, maybe your dips are on the opposite extreme?

Put it in test mode and see if your getting full speed.. If not adjust the throttle pot or replace it.. Whats your top speed reading during gameplay?

Also...

Silly as it sounds - check that the shifter is not installed upside down. Since the handle can be rotated freely I have seen this happen.

I'm sure it is the way the dips are set and will check what they are on tonight. Everything is working the way it should. As for top speed that is another thing controlled by the dips and currently the top speed on mine is 262. Just seems silly that you can option it so even if you run absolutely perfect you can't finish the race but I guess some ops were greedy.

I need to finish cleaning it and put the topper on so I can take some pics for Phet. :D

Check to make sure your accelerator pot is still there. Some ops replaced them with a microswitch and some resistors.

Just remember, the second lap in the race is the hardest lap to complete. You get the least amount of time on that lap. Lap 2 weeds people out. There are tables in the manual that show based on your settings how much time you get on each lap. In each case, lap 2 is the least amount of time.

I'm not saying that something isn't wrong with your set-up or settings, but that is the hardest lap.

F&F Drift can be set up so that it's literally impossible to get further than HALFWAY TO THE FIRST CHECKPOINT. ON EVERY TRACK. Not so much greedy as just dumb -- the race timer options are completely arbitrary and not based on any track.
