Pole Position Free Play w/attract mode

mjenison already posted in this thread exactly what you need to change to remove "GAME OVER" (it's quoted above in post #66).
Why exactly do people want to do this? Because of screen burn? Removing that will only be useful if you've installed a new monitor... otherwise you're going to be able to read "GAME OVER" anyway due to burn. ;) A better hack would be to change the text color to black.

Matt,
I asked about some resources, because i don't fully understand the process, or how to balance checksums. I'm looking to learn more. I can just "Google search, but i figured I'd ask, in case anyone knows of one website that may be a better starting point than others. Or maybe a book, or a class. It helps to know what i'm looking for.

So assuming I dissasemble, just change the characters to spaces, adjust checksums somehow, and reassemble - i should be able to save those files, then burn my eproms, and good to go?

Why do it? Yes - my PP2 has no burn in it, and i'd like to keep it that way. Since i'm not knowledgeable enough (hopefully YET) to hack it to a black text, i'll take what i can get.

Thanks for the reply.

There's no disassembly/assembly involved. Use a hex editor to change the bytes as specified. Save and burn.

Changing the text color might be a single byte change... maybe I can take a quick look.

Ah yes, the "spaces". Byte for byte its the same, so no need to mess with the checksum, right? Pardon my ignorance.

No, you're changing the values, so you need to adjust the checksum. Say for example you change a $47 to a $20. You would need to adjust the stored checksum value by -$27.
