Pole Position Free Play w/attract mode

Update:

I was able to successfully get the freeplay hack to work with the accelerator on a test bench.

Now I need a tester to whom I can send the EPROM patch to and have them test on a real machine. The pedal, when emulated, gives out an output of 00 to FF, but that's for a ideal/perfect potentiometer; I suspect on real games the upper and lower boundaries could be quite different. I have the "acknowledge" point currently set at 60, so want to make sure that's a good average setting. If not, I can tweak it slightly.

Prior to this I had "SHIFT TO START" flashing on the screen. Recommendations what the instruction should be now?

ACCEL TO START

or

PRESS ACCELERATOR TO START

or

??

vote now!

Is the code for PP1? If so, send it my way and I'll burn the chips and swap them out and test the thing.

FWIW: "PRESS ACCELERATOR TO START" sounds nice.

free play - press pedal to start would be my vote.
I have both PP1 and 2 cabs here if you need another beta tester.

Ok, currently I just have the one version modified.

I need testers that have a Pole Position with Namco credits at the top and Atari credits on the bottom of the title screen.

If so and you have an EPROM burner and 3 2764 EPROMS, PM me your email address

Update:

Based on tester feedback I had to make a small tweak for handling pot voltages that might drift slightly. Also, I went with "PRESS PEDAL TO START". I'll be sending out a new version to the testers and await feedback.

Are you still looking for testers for this? I have a Pole Position now, and will also have a PP2 to test soon.

I've had this link up for a while, and for all the hype about wanting a revamped pp freeplay, I don't know if anyone has tried it out yet.

So, still untested as far as I know.

I will check to see if I have any 2764s left tonight. If I do, I will burn them and test it. If not, I will have to order some first.

Is there anyone willing to burn these for me? I'll cover costs of course... I'd be happy to test this and update how it works.

I will go dig my PP out of storage and put my supposed working board in it to test these ROMs for the good of the cause if necessary.

The last tester reported that the free play worked, but was unable to shift during game play. As I don't have access to the actual hardware and MAME incorrectly emulates the hardware, I have stopped development on this. If anyone wants the source or notes I have to continue development, they can contact me.

This project is cursed :)

Well, if I ever get to the PP board in my stack of PCBs to repair (and manage to fix it), then maybe I'll take a shot at this...
