Pole Position Cockpit Topper Revisited

Phet, it looks absolutely phenomenal. You've done an awesome job. I WILL BUY (but I'm sure you could have guessed that). Just a thought... If you could get a really high res scan of that car maybe you could drop it in as a raster object? Before all the vector snobs start flaming me, I'm just thinking it's a small object to begin with and very hard to draw with vectors. Maybe if the scan is high res enough no one would be able to tell the difference. Then again if you want to vector it that would be awesome as well. Just trying to provide a practical alternative if that's what it takes to get this done. :)

I was going to rescan the car at a higher res tonight. I didn't have time, I'll do it tomorrow right after work. One more day... Great job phet!!

Thanks guys. I see a few more details to fix, minor ones, but might as well fix them. Jeff, I was thinking of doing that exact thing with the car. Take the high res scan into photoshop, crop the car, drop it into the .ai file and blend the raster edges into the vector file. The white arrow to the left of the car I actually have drawn, I just haven't dropped it into the main document yet.

Any other glaring mistakes or discrepancies? How should these be printed? Screened to metal, screened to vinyl, solvent ink jet on vinyl? To tell you the truth, the reason I started this project is that I was going to have a custom one printed on translite material so that I could build a thin-line light box for it to be back lit and mounted on my machine. I want them to look sweet and last a good long time, but don't want them to cost $200 a piece.

I think it looks awsome nice job!...I vote for a sticker and if the metal part dont pan out everyone can do there own thing in there town and decal up at home.

I think I'll be able to shore this up by the weekend. Seems like many of the vocal critics have fallen silent. Hope that's a good thing.

I need to see what you want for them before I commit....... but like I said before I am in for 2 if there not crazy money.

Thanks man, there we go:

Scan is on the bottom right? If so the the repro has a notch at the bottom right of the white/black sign with the red arrow pointing left but the scan has a 45 degree angle, no notch. :)

Also, on the same sign, the bottom left is squared on the repro but it is angled on the scan.

Sweet job so far! ;)

Do you really want/looking for input? I see a few things. Starting with the track shape and shadow positioning. Look below the 180 sign the shape isn't as smooth. Are you going for a 100% reproduction? I might just be picky since I scanned it in.

I was only offering a little art direction. The font in the upper left corner still doesn't match the original. I posted before but figured you weren't interested. If you change your mind, the original font they used appears to be Helvetica condensed bold. Some of the other minor details are still a bit off (starting gate, Fuji Speedway font, legend) but it's your call on whether or not it's worth running that far with it. Again, nice work.

and...
the yellow path needs some tweakin and the font on the PP in upper left corner is also not correct :D

Looks like your semicolon after "Counter Steer" should be a colon. Also are you missing the (left-pointing) arrowhead above the steering wheel?

3 MORE HOURS OF BS. This thing is a bitch. The track has 4 separate organic shapes that are a pain in the ass to get right. The inside curves of the white, the outside curves of the white, the yellow suggested path and the blue drop shadow. Now, the fonts should be pretty damned close, the starting gate was tweaked and the placement of everything was tweaked.

There we go. Fixed a few more things that got fucked up during my last round of fixes. How's this (besides the racecar and colon):

Boy, thought you guys would be excited that I changed that Pole Position font. Helvetica Neue Condensed bold was partially right. Some were HN Condensed Black, and in either font, the 'S', 'O', and 'P' were all wrong, so I created outlines for them and tweaked them to fit the original shapes of the letters better. As to the speed font, again, SF Collegiate bold was partially right, but the '1's and 5's were wrong as was the '7' and '2'. The '8' also needed severe tweaking. I changed the legend and copyright fonts to Helvetica Neue ultralight and re-kerned all the instruction text. Fixed the FUJI font a bit more. Added the arrow head to the curve above the steering wheel, fleshed the wheel arms out with the flared ends from the original and added the arrow to the left of the car. Fixed the longer arrows pointing to the track curves. Messed with the track curves, yellow path curve and the blue shadow. I am sure I could tweak those four shapes indefinitely and never get them exactly right in relation to each other. Rich has agreed to print these and Takeman should be getting a quote on the metal mounting panels. These will be solvent ink jet according to Rich.

Got tired of looking back....

Thanks Paul-skin. I see a few more minor details that I still need to fix, but quite honestly, it's looking pretty damn good to me at this point. Not sure where everyone's at this week, man this place has been dead. Makes a guy wanna quit the hobby and start a sweet farewell thread.

The only things that really jump at me are the "P" and "A" in Speeday across the top and the needle in the "180" guage. But even those are pretty minor, keep up the good work.
