Pole Position Cockpit Refurb

If you want to really get creative, you can always wire this up as a pseudo-igniton

I took your advice on the psudo-ignition switch. I plan to still install the free play mod to stop the progress of the Game Over burn-in, but I decided that the CP with the hole was the best condition of the 3. I figured the lock cylinder would look better than a button or knock-out cap.

I think the lock cylinder is smaller than the hole and looking for some sort of trim ring. I imagine I could make one out of something, but was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for something of the shelf that my initial Google searches didn't yield. I have to believe something is out there, just haven't crafted the right search terms.

I might do this too. I've had a button in the keyhole for the last 10 years and it works, but it's so hidden that I have to tell people about it every time. I think the shiny key will be noticed a lot easier. Does turning it one way send a signal or will turning it both ways send a signal?

The listing on ebay didn't have much detail, but most other ones I saw were a single-pole double-throw switch where you could mechanically block one direction if you wanted. I should receive it tonight, so I'll let you know.

This one only turns clockwise. No docs so not sure if it can be reconfigured but doesnt really matter. It does what I want unless you have any cool ideas for an accessory mode.

Fit about as well as I expected. Not quite a hotdog in a hallway or pencil in a pickle jar but it falls through without a retaining nut behind it. 🤣

Probably go with this until I find a nice but cheap bezel that doesnt cost less than the shipping. (Might be a while.)

Hold up, so it doesn't fit tight in a coffee can? What the fuck I thought it would've fit perfectly.

I bet you could 3D print a nice little white circular piece for this to clean it up cosmetically. Might cover some of the instructions but it would look clean.

Just realized something not great about the lock cylinder... it has a spring that keeps the key from being left in the cylinder. You need to press it in and turn it to close the switch. Need to look closer to see if it is something that can be removed.

Well, sadly, I took a picture of my credit button and it's the most embarrassing picture I've ever taken in this hobby. This is almost as bad as having your picture taken with flash revealing that you just pissed your pants on a dark dance floor. I guess you REALLY can't see down there. Apparently I never refinished this coin door back in 2007 cause back then I thought it was 'good enough'. Someone please come to my house and revoke my restoration card.

I trimmed a 2x4 to fit snuggly between the top and bottom plywood of the cabinet base. I fastened the plywood with 8 lag screws. On the top, one screw on each side of the split, and on the bottom 2 screws on each side of the split.

The seam on the floor is covered with a rubber mat with a diamond plate pattern. The carpet didn't extend up around the pedals, but I liked the way it looked. I just bought standard carpet hardware to cover up my imperfect cuts.

I covered the top seam with a painted piece of wood. I thought satin would match better. Might touch it up later with something that blends better, or might not...

Inside the cockpit, I covered the seam with a wooden strip as well.

Here is a view of the primered bondo along the bottom of the reassembled cabinet.

Where did you get the rubber mat? I like it and need something on my bare wood floor.
I didn't do new T-Molding on mine because I figured it would be too difficult to work it in where the most cabinets are cut. Mine is uncut. They must have put the t-molding on before putting side panels on.

Here it is.

Rubber-Cal's diamond-plate mats protect floors with slip-resistance and shock-absorption for indoor and outdoor use. It's a popular product! https://a.co/d/3HiihUb

Don't worry, most guys wouldn't even notice because their attention is drawn to the eraser head nipple-button.

If it makes you feel any better, I realized after I got this that Monaco GP requires a switch with NO, NC, and COM all connected (i.e. a three terminal switch). Sigh...

Could you use the switch to control a relay that has the NO, NC, and COM terminals?

Interesting idea. I'll look into relays and what it would look like. I should make a separate thread. I have Turbo as well. I need to check that out too. I think this could be a cool solution for lots of racing games.

It was great while it lasted. Had it on last night, walked by and it was blind. The 1.5A fuse was blown and looked like it was not the slow blow it was supposed to be. Put a 1A SB in to see if that was all it was.... and it wasn't. Flyback exploded with sparks....

I'll probably craete a separate post in the monitor section but thought I'd bounce some questions off anyone still following this thread...

1.) Are flybacks still as hard to find for this monitor as every post i have seen in history?

2.) I just recapped a Kortek monitor for my OutRun project which is far from finished. Even if it doesn't line up great with the bezel, how hard might it be to use it until either I fix the PP monitor or finish OutRun? (Assuming the Kortek doesn't have any problems)

3.) If all else fails, I have an LCD that was in my Stargate before I put a G07 in it. I plugged it in, but no signal, so I could play around with it. Need to read up on it. there'd only RGB and. Sync, so I'm guessing its looking for a different sync and it a matter of resolving that on one side or the other.

Im debating pulling the G07 out of Stargate for our Halloween party Sat, but that would be the last last resort...

Party Sat and my Sea Wold is down, had to buy an new LCD for my MAME cabinet and then PP shits the bed today. so this is what this hobby is really like...lol.

All is not lost... here is the Kortek. Took a little bit to dial in a stable picture. Just need to dial n the size and colors and see how it lines up with the bezel.

Yeah, but most people put the credit button in the coin door lock. That's the way I did it. It's worked like that for 15+ years. Because yes, if you have it on FreePlay with standard ROMs, it'll just keep auto starting races over and over until you shut it off.

Tight! Where'd you get the idea for those pedals? Looking good!
