Pole Position Cockpit Artwork: Sweeter than the Upright

But I wonder why? The cockpit art really has it's own distinct look. The colors are awesome and the abstract shapes and action lines are dynamic. The uprights are pretty boring in comparison. I wish the uprights carried the same style of artwork as the cockpits do. Wonder why the change? Here are some pics of the cockpit artwork:

Now here's the upright:

WTF? Other than the logo and the little car badge on the sides, they look like 2 totally different games. Me no get it.

Thats some pretty cool stuff. I remember being impressed with it back in the day. The original stuff captures the spirit of the game, I guess they were going for fluff with the Pole Position II.

If I look at my Pole Position II artwork, I can just make out the raised surface of the underlying original. I've thought about peeling back the top layer to see how the original looks, but since there is'nt a repro around, I've been hesitant. Has anyone ever tried this?

In the Pole Position manual, it talks about a steel banner sign that mounted above the cockpit. Does anyone have one of these, I can't remember ever seeing one.

I have a friend that wants to try his hand at reproducing the PPII CP side art for me. He claims it wouldn't be hard to scan and vectorize. Would anyone be interested?

Yep it exists. I tried vectorizing it from photos and measurements. I worked on it for weeks - all the while asking someone, anyone, for a high res scan. I got it pretty close, and when I thought I was about done, someone finally sent me a high res scan to work from. Once I got the scan, and realized I wasn't as close as I thought I was, I lost all interest in the project. Here's where I left off:

The track shadow is supposed to be blue, not black, and there are other discrepancies. When we had our second kid, I lost all interest in poring over and further tweaking illustrator files at home.

i have the topper, guess i could scan it. any interest?

I scanned it in over two years ago. I gave it to Phet to vectorize it. If anybody wants to do it I'll post the file again. The file is scanned in at 400 dpi. Its 29.5 mb. Low-res screen shot of scan below. I also scanned in NOS PPII cockpit gauge stickers for one of the repo art guys were those ever made ? I don't remember seeing them anywhere.
