Pole Position Boots to a Corrupt Screen

Thanks for the info. I will check the videos out.

What I really need to educate myself on is the position, type, and files associated with the ROMS on the actual Pole Position boards. Seems like some of this will help with that. I really wish someone just zipped them up with a good README.
Watch both videos... the first one should make alot of things fall into place re: the "logostics" of stuff... the second video(although hard to understand because of his accent) should also carry some value.

Do you have an eeprom programmer?

As I understand it, the GQ-4X4 is a bit more versatile than the TL866II... due to the ability for higher voltage levels for tickling the bits(anyone reading, correct me if I'm wrong)

best of wishes,
DYLAN

Ok. Did some investigation.

Signs, small cars, etc. are 11N, 12N, and 13N. I pull these roms and read them.

12N is completely wrong. It is just a bunch of 3F everywhere. So I need to re-burn a new ROM for that.

11N and 13N both read as 136014-156. That seems to be good (in that Rom Ident finds them). The part that is strange to me is that the contents are different but ROM Ident gives me the same number.

These are for the poleposa2 ROMs.

Now I need to figure out the correct ROM to burn into location 12N.

Pointers would help.

I see ROMS here but I can't figure out how to download (probably something obvious) - http://adb.arcadeitalia.net/dettaglio_mame.php?game_name=poleposa2&search_id=1

the signs are different in Namco and Atari versions of the game, that might be the difference? I worked on a Pole Position II for a guy years ago, it was an Atari cabinet, but the board had all Namco roms but with Atari labels. it was weird. I wasn't able to get the free play roms to work because they're only for the Atari version apparently.

those were dark times I don't miss

Right now I just need a pointer to what goes into ROM 12N and where to find ROMs in general.

According to the pole position manual(see below)

11N = 136014-131

12N = 136014-157

13N = 136014-156

Re 11N and 13N... you said the burner showed different contents, but ROM Ident said they were both 136014-156... is it possible you accidently uploaded the file for 13N twice?

hope I'm helping,
Dylan

Interesting. I just PM you about this.

The schematic shows 12N as 136014-126??

Anyway, I agree what you show seems to make more sense.

This is fixed! (except the steering)

Summary:
Not booting - just needed a new Z80 processor
Graphics corruption in small cars, small signs, prepare to qualify banner, and game over text at the end - I had to burn a new 12N and 11N set of ROMs. 12N I used 136014-157. 11N I used 136014-131.

While I was at it I installed the freeplay ROMS - https://forums.arcade-museum.com/th...d-with-attract-screen-is-finally-here.483822/

A good reference thread on ROMS for PP - https://forums.arcade-museum.com/threads/pole-position-eproms-check.445944/

Now to figure out the steering and I am all set!

Figured out that the steering issue is in the opto board. I swapped over my board from Tempest and it works. So I just need to fix my opto board now. Getting closer...
the header pin solder usually disintegrates, had that on both Tempest and Tron at work years ago. I wind up replacing the pins and plugs for added measure.

Got one of these - https://www.mikesarcade.com/cgi-bin/store.pl?sku=ATARIOPTO - at $10 it was cheaper than probably even getting parts to fix the original board.

All fixed now. Pole Position is fixed! Thanks all! Especially @journeymandt

BTW - for a minute I thought my gas pedal was messed up since I could only go 180mph - FYI the default dips are not the ones for Twin Galaxy style scoring (or high speed) - see https://forums.arcade-museum.com/th...-the-lap-times-required-to-get-67-310.281561/

Now off to https://forums.arcade-museum.com/threads/gun-fight-repair-thread.499717/ (another project long on the back burner)
