Pole Position 2 front plate hole. To bondo or bondon't?

Hi!

My Atari Ireland Pole Position 2 has a big gaping hole in the front plate that I need to fix somehow. The plate is made of particle board. Can this be fixed with a combination of replacement wood and bondo, or should I just find a new plate and apply my virgin sawing skills? Any tips for good results?
