Hello my gamers! Let me try to make sense out of this question I'm about to ask. Pole Position 1 and 2's break screeching noise is very loud and obnoxious. The good thing is that there are versions of those 2 games where the break screeching noises aren't incredibly loud and modified to sound like how they did in an arcade collection (Namco Museum 50th anniversary). The only thing is, I'm not sure what version of the game or emulator that they're using. I found some videos to kinda show what I'm taking about.

1st one is a version from the MyArcade handheld. Skip to 10:29 to hear the less annoying break sounds

The 2nd one is a game play from replay burners! Skip to 0:44 for this video

I've been playing this game on mame quite a bit lately and started to get a headache from that loud chaotic sound. So if there is a certain emulator or setting in the game to make it to where I can get the break screeching nosie to sound like of the videos i sent instead of the default loud obnoxious version of the break noise, that would be nice and much appreciated!!!!!!! 😅

Yeah, the game sounds are what they are. I've had an original Pole Position cockpit in my Arcade for almost 20 years now. Loud beeps, track perimeter bumps, brake screeches, hot digital chick voices, it's all part of the experience. Maybe just turn down the volume a bit if it bothers you.

If you don't like the sounds, don't play the game. ;)
It's not all the sounds, just the one the screeching sound in particular! 😅

I honestly prefer the sample used in 50th anniversary and saw videos of people being able to use that exact sample in ports of the game or old versions of mame. Maybe it's a setting in the game or a certain emulator i need to download? ^^

That's a fake version so it doesn't count

depending on the version of Mame you are using, the Pole Position sounds may be generated by the emulator or they may be samples. If they are samples, then you may be able to load the tire screech sample into an MP3 editor and reduce the volume of the sample. Look in your emulator folder and see if there is a "SAMPLES" directory. If you find poleposition samples in there then it is probably genereating the sounds from the samples. I think Mame 0.78 was probably using samples but I can't verify right now. Newer versions of Mame may be emulating the sound chip so would not need samples.

As mentioned above, the sounds on the actual arcade are just fine -- actually quite nice. The samples in mame are completely messed up -- I believe that the sample plays at double pitch (maybe double volume as well). Play the original and you'll love it. Mame and PiPosition are unbearable.

+1. The off-sounding tire screeches alone made me sell my PiPosition, feel like it bothered me way more than it should have.

I'll just swap PCBs to back and forth from PP1/PP2 when needed.

It seems like I'm the only one who actually enjoys and prefer the 50th anniversary sample more than the original!!!!!! 😅

I don't doubt the sound isn't nice on hardware! I own this game on my switch and they made it the screeches more hardware accurate! Only bummer is, my switch doesn't work anymore, and other ports of pole position weren't meant to be played on controllers. The only version i really resort to is mame. X>

That's understandable! Also, good news everyone! I found a sample pack for pole position, fired up an old mame build, and BOOM! worked like it was plug and play! ^^
i would love to have this Bill
