This may be a silly question but here goes....

Given the various documented problems with the Pole Position PCB I was wondering if replacing it with a PPII would make things run any better or more reliably?

Just wonderin'

Nope. Those games are unreliable because of the horribly underspecced power wiring, the crummy power supply, the lack of thick enough power traces on the board, the corroding custom chips, etc, etc. Both boards are pretty much the same construction, and thus are going to be the same reliability wise. You'd do a lot more for the machine's reliability by adding a second power harness (plugging into the 1/4" spade test point connectors) to each board and upgrading the power supply. It *is* possible to make a Pole Position reliable.

I am driving a Pole Position II for about 6 month, one hour a day. The pcb runs with a switching power Supply (15A, +5,05V) new +5V and GND cables directly to the dedicated points on the pcb, I repaired it myself, made all sockets new and had up to now no problems.
Pole Position is for the moment my favourite game.

Bob;
Something like this would do fine:

One for each board connected directly to the 1/4" terminals on the PCBs themselves. I also jumped the 1/4" connections to several points on the PCBs themselves as well to remove the resistance from the small power traces.
This way you can also adjust the proper voltage to each board separately.
Don't forget to remove the sense lines as well......

I just realized that my pic looks confusing......
I have the power also connected to the original edge connectors as well, super redundant!
