I got this poker cab a couple weeks ago for cheap.

My 1st instinct was to flip the monitor and make it into our new 412 in one. My beat-up Taito cocktail is great but it was time for an "upgrade". As ugly as it may be we've had countless hours playing games as a family.

Then I got shitty poker game and I was thinking that I could make it into a standup cab, leaving ugly Taito with an uncertain future.

However, today I had a post Lent vision (mainly due to being able to drink beer again) {though technically Lent is not over but I said f'it for the long weekend} I was thinking I could convert ugly poker into my po' man's Joust.

I have the boards (and an extra set just in case) and a control panel I got off of Linkage. Mind you if I do that I'd only borrow the joysticks and buttons from the CP and no harm done.

Honestly Ottawa's market is real bad for games. And I doubt that I'll ever find Joust at a fair price.

I also have the sweet-ass smoked glass bezel that just happens to fit over shitty poker's bezel.

BTW, in case anyone's interested. The poker pcb is fully working and I will sell for a good price!

I'm not interested in side-art or any artwork for that matter. Yes, I can play Joust any day of the week on the Playstation but playing it in a cab is where it's at.

What do you think?

If you are good with a saw and slot cutter, why not just carve out something a little different from it?

A young guy i know converts gambler cabs to mame cabs. He's gotten really good with it. Here is one he carved out for a friend of mine that i eventually finished up for mame.

Throw a cheap 19-in-1 into it and set it to play only joust. No one will know the difference.

Is the poker board JAMMA? If so then the monitor is running -neg sync. Williams boards (Joust, Robotron, Sinistar, Bubbles, Defender, Stargate) are +pos sync games. If you have a Jamma harness in there then I would just go for a JROK board and you will have all the games - plug and play - and you wont have to worry about the monitor sync.

Not all Joust versions run the same 19-1, MAME, Red, Green etc

I would pick the version that makes the most sense to you.

Posting this here to show you how cool those poker cabs can look. Here's chopperthedog's Multi Williams in a poker cab. I love this thing:

Many monitors can do both syncs and if you happen to have one that doesn't, I was able to convert the sync on an adaptor with a cheap HEX Inverter IC (74LS04).

That is awesome because that poker cab has the characteristics of a defender with that coin box area sticking out like that. Looks like a legit mini. :)

I like how the monitor is set back behind the marquee as it would also give more room for the control panel. Have to look at my two cabinets to see if I can mod them to be more like this. Was this the shape of the original cabinet? Or was it one large bezel that went all the way to the top of the machine?

Thanks for sharing.

It's chopperthedog's, not mine but I remember something about him re-configuring the marquee area.

Lots of good ideas. The poker game's not JAMMA. I also have a spare WG that I swapped out of my Robo.

The 19-in-1 is not a bad idea. I just don't want a cluttered CP. Joust, in my opinion is a co-op game. The poker cab's wide enough for two to play. I kinda like the idea of playing Rally-X but would need joysticks to support it.

Personally, if your going to make an effort to make a po' man joust. Why don't you make an effort to make a really one?

My woodworking skills are non-existent and building a cab from scratch would cost a lot more than the few dollars I spent on the ugly poker cab. It was really cheap.

Good chance to learn :)
Yea it going to cost more but selling it later on would be easier :)
With all those tree up north you would think plywood might be cheaper. :)

Ultimately, It your choice and my opinions don't mean squat..

Au contraire, I asked for peoples' opinions and got a lot of good ideas from everyone.

I didn't even look at prices for sheets of wood because I wanted to do this project on the cheap.

Right now I'm leaning towards the 19 in one but the monitor gave up on me last night and now I have a vertical collapse on it.

Yet one more project to add to the pile

This hobby's pretty frustrating.

Sorry your monitor collapse on you. If you were closer, I would invite you over and we could fix that problem.

Sometime when a project pile grows too big, I either get friends to help or sometime I hire help..

May your project list be short and your piles be small.

Arcade collection should always be fun...

Here's what I started with and how it ended. I did add the marquee shelf with light, the marquee occupies the upper slot that the original bezel sat in, bottom of shelf routed and angle stock used to retain marquee. The biggest problem with converting poker cabs is the steep angle and shallow depth of the control panel. I altered it to be at the same depth and angle of a standard defender. Which also set the bezel back further and I was able to set monitor back further as well. Graphics on front are red and yellow vinyl I had cut at a sign shop. These cabs can be fun when done right. One in op could have potential.

good day.

good day.

Congrats on how well that turned out. I looked at my cabinets today and I'm going to have some trouble making the control panel bigger. Both cabinets have HAPP vision pro monitors in them and the neck and neck board stick way back. So looks like I might be only able to get an inch or two more if I ditch he monitor shroud and move the bezel back. Have to give it some more thought. I cleaned them up and tested them and they worked great. So my son can play the 8-liners in the mean time. :)

That's looks awesome. Great work.

It does look really good.
What would you estimate the cost was for the artwork?
