Mitsurugi-w's post reminded me of a question I'd meant to ask earlier: did you ever see machines on location which never seemed to be turned off?

Did some operators really leave machines on for 24/7 for years...and yet they still worked?

What's the longest time period you saw a machine "on" for?

My Pops had his Centipede cab plugged in/turned on for probably 2 1/2 years straight. I wish I was joking. The monitor finally needed caps about 3 months ago. Its been off ever since ;)

The monitor?!?! I would have thought the ARII would have been toasted first.

WalMarts we serviced were always on 24/7 364 days a year (They powered them down when the closed Christmas eve).

The guy that I'm meeting up with tomorrow told me that his games only get turned off when there is a power outage. The machine I'm working on has been on for 15 years and still works. Only had monitor adjustment tweeks over the years.

Says he has owned 100s of games since the 80's. He doesn't know how to work on them. I think he just gets rid of his games when they start breaking down.

Games

I bought a game from a guy several years ago. He gave me a tour of his other games. They were all on. We became friends shortly after and everytime I was at his house, his games were on. I said: "Dont you turn your games off?" He looked a little surprised and said: "what do you mean off?" He had a couple of the running for years. I could not believe it. But it is true.

I was talking with an operator who ran an arcade from 1992 to 2002. He said that he tried turning the games off at night, but there would bea few that wouldn't come back on, so he left them powered up. I asked how long they were one and he said he had a couple of games that he bought in '83 that were never off except a couple of power failures. When they started to look bad, he would pull them and put them in his "round tuit" shed. Since he never got a "round tuit", they never got fixed. That's where I bought them. A couple of the monitors had severe burn, but some games fired right up. I am guessing they got stored for some other reason.
