I need some suggestions please. I am trying to interface my acade and computer controls for a MAME project.
Thanks guys,
Greg

Dozens of ways to do it. No "plug and play" solution unless you want one of those crappy x-arcade things. The old way was to just hack a keyboard, but the easy way these days is to just get a standalone keyboard encoder like an i-pac and go from there. It's pretty simple.

But, then again, we mostly deal with fixing classic games here, not trashing them for emulator things. There might be some other forum out there that could help you Build Your Own Arcade Controls, however.

Ian,
Thank you for the ipac reference. I will research it further. Also, I bought the cabinet brand new; it was made from scratch (link below).

Yeah - just giving you a hard time - I know that nobody here would hack up a classic cabinet, paint it black, stuff a fifteen inch computer monitor in it, glue on printouts of bits of artwork from 30 other games, and bolt an aircraft carrier to the front of it with every possible arcade control combination on it (for all those games that are four players, with ten buttons/two joysticks each).

The i-pac is a really neat little device though, I've used them before. Super easy to set up, flexible, and much easier than the old method of hacking up keyboards or gamepad controllers.

There's nothing wrong with MAME in and of itself. Just the stupid things people do in the name of MAME.

I'm not exactly sure what your trying to do, but If I understand correctly and you just need to plug some arcade controls into your PC.

You need one of these! http://www.lizardlick.com/Toodles-Cthulhu-for-PCPS3_p_543.html

It's pretty much like an ipac, but cheaper and simpler, and it's totally plug and play on windows and shows up as a USB gamepad. They are made for making custom joysticks for PS3/PC (yes, they are plug and play on PS3 also) so if you want more than one player you'll need two of them. I don't think they support trackballs or anything crazy, but for a joystick and a ton-o-buttons they work wonders.

The Ipac is much easier to setup and is already configured for Mame standard button configuration and you can hook up P1 & P2 controls. So in the End it's also much cheaper.

There's a VE Ipac for $35 Shipped
