I was on NERDtendo's thread about his PSone games for sale, but I didn't want to get that one derailed.

I'm thinking about shifting my focus from collecting Nintendo to Playstation.
I've already knocked out 2/3 of the most expensive titles and overall they keep going down, though, so At the time they may have been good deals now they are fair at best. But I've never collected for value, so I don't care.

Nothing on PSone is really over $150, aside from a limited edition that you can still buy the game complete for under $40.

Playstation is a great system for JRPGs.

Beyond RPGs I don't think there's much to collect. Most of the 3D stuff has aged terribly.

Yeah, no doubts there.

Final Fantasy VII was really hard for me to get in to when I picked it up. I had played IX before VII, so I was spoiled I guess. After I finally got in to it I did really enjoy it, though.

I would never consider going for a full collection. The PSone has way too many games for that, but I still think the prices are great for getting a large selection of RPGs. Those are something I would actually either play, or just like to have since I enjoy the genre.

There were a couple Mega Man side scrollers I remember being decent. Castlevania of course.

Crash, Spyro, Wipeout, Silent Hill, Parappa.....Tomb Raider?

I guess the Resident Evil games might still have a certain charm...

Of the three most expensive titles the only one I'm missing right now is a Mega Man game.

The Misadventures of Tron Bonne. It's actually one of the games that has gone up a lot, rather than follow the downward trend.

I really enjoy the PSone, simply because some of my favorite Final Fantasy games are on it. The three of the main series are all great titles. I've poured hours in to them. I'm not really a sealed game collector, but I really want IX brand new. It was the first Playstation game I got, so it may be nostalgia, but I still think it was largely overlooked. Most fan-boys say VII was the last good one.

There is also a decent selection of 2D fighters on the system. A genre I have yet to collect for it. I've been working on getting Street Fighter games recently, and somehow I've neglected the PSone. I got a whole mess of Saturn games that had Darkstalkers, Street Fighter Collection and more, but I don't think I own a single Capcom fighter for PSone.

The fighters are ok. If I remember correctly the Saturn had the superior versions of most fighters. Although both are hard to justify in this day in age with the polished re-releases they've gotten on disc and psn.

Yeah, I have Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix on the PS3, but I'm still a sucker for owning the originals. And I own the CPS2 board for SSFIIX, so I think I'm set. I just like them all lined up.

Most of the collections and mass availability are nice, though, as the prices are cheap.

FF IX really is the superior game technically, although I don't think the characters are as compelling. The biggest problem at the time was that going back to the mini character style and the medieval setting were both seen as steps backwards. Maybe that was just code for "it's not final fantasy vii part 2."

I wonder if the people still clamoring for that remake/sequel are 30 year old men or a new generation of pre-teen gamers.

That's why I say it was hard for me to get in to VII, since IX is much more polished gameplay wise. I do think it's a great game, and I enjoy the story. It's kind of funny because what you mention as a "step backward" is what I hear a lot of people stating as a step in the right direction. Back to the roots of the series. Personally, I like the art style, the old-European architecture and what not. That deep fantasy setting is one of my favorites. I'm not as big a fan of the more western approach, such as with Skyrim. That's all personal preference, though.

What can I say. This was a time when gamers were literally using polygon counts in their fanboy arguments. Today we are inundated with dreary post apocalyptic worlds and war torn soldiers, praising anything that tries to be different. Back then in an era of adolescent gamers playing Super Mario 64 that was a symbol of gaming's maturation.

Fallout 3 and New Vegas are two of my favorite current gen games. Too many copies around now, though. Everything from Borderlands to Black Ops 2 with Nukatown Zombies (a little obvious). Now, this is from an observational perspective, as I haven't played either... Borderlands is on my list, but the only reason I liked Fallout is because it was more RPG than FPS, and I guess Borderlands is more FPS than RPG.

I remember when FPS were heralded because of their single player campaigns and the multi-player stuff was just a bonus. Half-Life and the first Halo were that way... but now Call of Duty is king. I haven't done much with FPS since Half Life 2. Still need to beat the first one, though.

I can't speak too much about originality, since I would generally be content playing much of the same over and over with new stories and such. Which is funny, since I can't really get in to any MMORPG that consumes many lives doing the same stuff over and over. I like playing new games and I don't complain when a company tries to innovate (Nintendo, for example).

Haven't played that one yet... I forget if I have it or not. I know a coworker grabbed one while I was working at the video game store.

If you like puzzle games, this one is a must try.

Every now and then I'll pull it out and people can not believe they missed this title.

PS1 is a great library, with excellent titles in almost any genre. There really isn't a deeper library around, especially for north american releases.

I personally love the early polygon era. The games are interesting and have a lot of character - they don't look like games from any other generation and I would take their style over the later PS2-era graphics any day.

Legend of Dragoon is a fun one. Plays almost like a FF game. Not sure how it's aged, as my @-hole nephew stole and threw away my disc 1 10 years ago, and haven't replaced it yet.

I would kill for a HD remake of FFVII...

Some of my favorite PS1 games exclusive to that console -

King's Field series (KF1-2, Shadow Tower) - the grandfather of the Demon's Souls/Dark Souls series and some of my favorite games of all time

Intelligent Qube - As others have said, great game, great atmosphere, graphics, music - it's a work of art

Project Overkill - the perfect console successor to Smash TV/Total Carnage

Wipeout 1-3 - These are by far the best Wipeout games of the entire series on any platform

Persona 2: EP - great rpg, deep with interesting characters

Alien Trilogy - an old favorite, classic early fps action

Clock Tower 1-2, Suikoden 2, Vandal Hearts....so many good games

I have Intelligent Qube, and I agree it is fun. Pretty obscure title, though.

AUSyTyIN, I do too, but at the same time I would really love to see a completely new main series Final Fantasy that lives up to the SNES and Playstation Trilogy. They are excellent games, and I have enjoyed the latest release (at least XIII, haven't done XIII-2 yet). I just miss having a world map and various other elements that have been absent since the days of PSone and before.

Some of my favorites are the early games: The port of the first Doom, Raiden Project, Xevious 3d/g, and Demolition Derby. R-Types, R-Type Delta, and Einhandler (from Square) also scratch my shooter itch.

A lot of the great RPGs have been mentioned; anyone remember when we could all pick up copies of Chrono Cross shirinkwrapped years after it was out?

There are some great oddball games on the PS1, like Skullmonkeys and Oddworld.

One of the fun things about PS1 collecting is the universal ability to play them on anything. PS2 has you covered, just like the PS3. It is nice to be able to throw them into a PS3 and play them through HDMI. My PS3 collection is very small, only a handful of games, but it gets a lot of play through PS1 games.

Tombi/Tomba is worth looking out for. Fun little side scroller, but can get pricey.

Lots of fun JRPGs... Legend of Dragoon, Vagrant Story, Star Ocean...

PS1 I'd put as my 3rd favorite system. It has alot of good titles. I resisted getting one at first but when I did I had a ton of good games to play.
