Playstation 3d display, any current & prior owners around?

I found myself wanting a small & cheap TV for the back bedroom and after returning two other, broken NIB Non-Sony TVs, I settled on the Playstation 3d Display. Due to the infamous problems with this set I also bought a 2 year replacement warranty at purchase.

Anyone else take the plunge before they are clearanced out for good?
Anyone get burned by their set and returned it/RMA'd it to Sony?

So far, the first day passed. I only own one blue ray movie and it looked nice and the included PS3 game was fun in 3d mode. So far no blinking red lights of death!

The only issue I see is a slight color fade on the right side, but everything says this is how LED backlit displays operate. I don't mind it, oddly it is not visible when blacks fade in.

I missed out on Samsung's GX TV back in the day, so I guess this is the successor.

I have been seriously considering getting a PlayStation 3D Monitor. I read that there were issues with it. I also read that some of the problems were related to how you connect devices to the monitor (i.e. PS3 plugged into HDMI device such as a surround sound system which was in-turn hooked up to the Monitor). I have been trying to look into it more. You can get one now for $299 and that's rediculously cheap considering the specs...Full HD, 3D, 240hz refresh rate, LED, and a free game.

Actually, it's even cheaper...most places (New Egg, Amazon, Best Buy, Gamestop) are selling the original TV/glasses/game box for $199. Everyone says be sure to get that warranty though!

I don't think you can watch actual television on it though, so keep that in mind.

There is no CoAx connections, but if you have sattelite service and the set-top box has HDMI or Component outputs then you can hook that up to the PlayStation Monitor. The monitor has 1 Component and 2 HDMI inputs.

If I had a real need for it, I'd pick one up at the $200 price, depending on how much the warranty was. Oh well.

So what is the common issue with these?

When these came out I thought they were way over priced, but $200 doesn't seem so bad.

I don't know from personal experience, but from what I gather there are three major issues...

- Blinking red lights issue...screen doesn't turn on (having to do with the power supply)

- Black screen interuption...screen cuts out to black throughout use (this seems to be tied with trying to run the PS3 through another HDMI source...such as a surround sound receiver...this is why in the manual SONY says to plug the system directly into the monitor)

- Faded or discolored right side...reports of a change in appearance on the right side (some people say this is a cap issue)

These are the problems that I have read reported. There is no source showing the failure rate of this monitor. It seems that only the consoles are tracked in this regard. I also read that it is very difficult to get SONY to admit to any of these problems when calling their customer service. I've read that they will say the issue is with your HDMI cable or with the item that is hooked up to the monitor. Most of the reports I have read showed that the customer returned the monitor to the store for an exchange. Some customers went back three times at which time the retail location said they would not honor anymore exchange on the product. This is when people started to contact SONY.

Here's a conversation for ya' at Best Buy (BB in the script):

Me: So I noticed the right side of the display has some color fade that's about half an inch wide. Black screens are black, it's just color scenes that have it.
BB: It's not supposed to do that and it will get worse with time. I'd return it for another.
Me: Really? Let me look at other LED displays and your PS3D display floor model. Hey, you're right, mine is pretty bad in comparison.
BB: Hey, I remember you, you came in last week looking for one of these right? The one we couldn't find was actually in transit and we have it. Want us to hold it?
Me: Yup! Time for a swap...

Display #2
Well, the right side is a bit better, still noticeable, but better. The audio on this display isn't as good as the first though and sounds tinny even after the same adjustments made to the other one. So, build quality is just okay. A $10 set of PC speakers solves the sound issue though. I've heard these were not made by Sony's TV division but were outsourced (a rumor though).

If you are using this as a regular 1080p set and like to experiment in 3-D games and movies, it's a great deal for the price. If you want to do it, now is the time, this was the last display in my BB district, so they're selling quick. Just be aware it is a gaming display and can have some build issues. Get a 2/4 year warranty and don't buy it from anywhere that doesn't offer one.

Also, be aware that there are only a few 3-D movies and games. I went hunting for a 3-D blue ray today and found the lowest was $20 on sale. My local BB is pretty big but didn't have Avatar 3-D either.

Thanks for the thread, I got one of these because I love 3d and havnet had or don't want to spend $2k on a lcd(maybe a projector). Come close to buying those mitzy's a couple times though.

I mainly got it for pc gaming but I cant get it to do that, some people on the net were saying they used a generic .inf file and some hackery to get it to work but I suspect Nvidia caught one and blocked them. Not working for me right now.And the Nvidia sites been hacked for some time now.

3d cable tv works so so, theres only two channels ESPN3D and XFN3d which is the cable companies channel and it has cute little short. THeres also some on demand stuff that works like concerts. I think hbo and starz also have a pay 3d channel.

Ps3 games work decent with some ghosting but you get used to it after awhile. The free games pretty cool and really shows off the 3d effects well. Rachet & Clank all 4 one is free right now for psn+ customers with I dunno 15 other games. Many of them good games.

The sound blows on this thing it doesnt come with a remote and I wish it had mounting brackets. Another pair of shutter cost $70. At 24" it wouldn't make the best family center tv. Remeber not to long ago most people had 18" tv's. I like the 24" size for gaming because bigger one start to really show the pixels. 32" ok but I think the display 60+ look like ass, a dirty one at that.

SO yeah again looking to get into 3d gaming on the cheap then get one and a 2-4 year warranty.

I bought a 3d Sony for the night stand. When my girl wants to watch movies I can still play my game. Throw on my Beats headphones and zone off. I had it since Christmas and have got it exchanged three times from bestbuy. After the forty five days they give silver members I was stuck dealing with Sony. I mailed it out due to flickering, I got a refurbished one(I was pissed) and it just would not power on at all. Then I sent it back immediately and got another one next day air. I have not really played with it much since then since I have lost interest in it, but it has been more headache then anything.

What a load of absolute SHIT. I play everything from C64 to PS3 on a 60" Plasma and the picture is fantastic.

No one in their right mind would rather a 24/32 inch TV over a 60 inch.

Agreed. I play in my 55 inch led Samsung and it looks mind blowing. Maybe you should check your resolution.

Everybody with a discerning eyes knows that theres tons of issues with flat panels, black levels, refresh rates, gaming pixelation. If you don't notice it good for you Im glad you can live in bliss.

Me I have a panny projector it goes up to 240" but I keep it arounf 120". I don't seem to notice most of those problems and SD content looks good on it.

ANYWAYS I got the pc 3d to work on it. I removed the current drivers on it and installed ones from mid April. Then i renistalled the hacked .inf and installed 3dtvplay. Only problem is the nvidia page has been hacked for several weeks now and my demo expires in a few days and I can't buy it or do anything else untill nvidia gets thier stuff together.

MOST ANY 720P PC game is now in 3d. Its awesome! Tested it on Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, Borderlands, Skyrim, GTA 4, Alien Vs Predator.

Display blacked out (and also no sound) twice during my last game of Fallout 3. Time for Sony to send a coffin my way. I've already started and have contacted customer service.

Wheee :)
