Playing DK3 in a Popeye cabinet?

You will need the correct mounts to rotate your monitor, the controls will be nearly the same, but im just not sure about the pin out of DK3 and popeye...

Looks like they might be the same..... or close onlynthe coin counter was different I think...

If your cab doesn't already have 5 holes through each side for both styles of monitor mounts I'd say not worth the attempt since there are not a lot of undrilled cabs left. You'd be better off trading off your cab to somebody who will want a dedicated Popeye (which are rising in value by the way).

If your cab has the 5 holes through each side yeah, you need vertical monitor mounting brackets, a power supply (the Popeye supply lacks the -5 volts), and a new wiring harness (because Popeye lacks the -5 volts).

Otherwise it's all the same parts, just different artwork.

5 years ago you would have been looking at $100 worth of parts plus $125 or so for the PCB. Now everybody is wanting $100 for a power supply, $100 for a harness, etc. If you are willing to use Mikes for aftermarket parts you could probably do it much more economically.

I've only seen one picture of the Popeye, so we'll take a peek and see what it looks like when I pick it up this afternoon. Worst case, I am adding a Popeye to the collection.....I know the cab looks near mint minus some of the artwork missing.

Yeah, a near mint Popeye with 3 holes per side in a plywood cab. Nintendo nerd's dream.

Take a look at the schematics on both. The Popeye power supply (PP-900A) lacks -5 volts needed by the DK3.

If I'd a PP-7B, you should be good.

supply. This supply only outputs 5VDC and 24VDC. Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr. will not work with this supply.

This subject has been taken about before. This thread should help:

So this Popeye is in great shape honestly. Not mint by any stretch, but certainly above average. It has 5 holes in the sides, so I guess that means the monitor can turn either direction.

I think I will finish it up as a Popeye and see how she does in my game room. I've never played Popeye!

Popeye is a great game actually. If you really want a DK3 you could easily hook a switcher up in your DK to play both on the same cab.
