Hello all. I am restoring a Plachoice 10. I have a few boards that have bad mask rom chips. Either the graphics are corrupt (bad U1) or the titles display until selected. The system then refreshes and that game is gone (bad U2). My question is: can I replace a mask rom with an eprom chip? I see lots of people that can burn games onto eproms but no one says anything about mask roms. I am not looking to swap the games out with different games. I just want a functional copy. I have taken the roms out and reset them to make sure it wasn't something simple like a loose chip. I am assuming the PCB is good because the system will display info or corrupted graphics. Interchangeable chips would make this an easy fix. Any thoughts or know how on this would be great.

Thanks!

Sounds more like bad sockets on the game pcb, mainly the security chip. If there is any issue with the security chip the game will not be displayed. you can also replace the bios chip on the main board with a modded version and it will bypass the security chip.

Hi there, I appreciate your responding to this thread. The motherboard is OK because I have tested each socket with a working game. I was thinking that the chips themselves are bad because on Rad Racer it will boot and the game will play. The graphics are just a mess though. On my other games (Fester and Mario 3) when I first turn the system on it will show the game information. It is when I select it that it pauses and refreshes without that games information anymore. I didn't really want to replace the bios because I am a purest and the modified splash screen would drive me nuts. Is there a way to test the security chip when it is out of the machine?

Okay, Rad Racer needs the eproms reprogrammed. As for the FQ & SMB3 it sound like the security chip has a bad connection, this is the smallest socketed chip on the game cart. Try removing the chip and cleaning the legs on the chip, they can be black sometimes and check the solder traces on the back side of the cart for deep scratches.
