Planning For The Future

That being said, if you want to discuss the declining availability of CRTs while openly admitting to throwing said parts in the trash when you get frustrated, you may not want to expect much support for the activity, at least from the "restore to original" crowd.

Well, I'm not looking for support. And this is not really about discussing the declining availability of CRTs. Declining availability is a fact, and I was looking at future options. I already know the prevailing thought concerning using what's available today to replace CRTs.

On that note, would anyone know of any other monitor forums where one can get repair advice?

Thanks.

Well don't think that, this is a great forum for monitor advice. Just because you personally could not fix your monitors, does not mean this forum stinks, or that you could even fix them from the beginning. and I'm not flaming you here... You and I are not monitor techs with all the correct tools, so of course there will be things we cannot fix and hit a brick wall. I fix all my own stuff, from my cars to my house and everything in between, and when I can't, I take the thing in question to a specialist, or someone that knwos more then me. I had to do that with my ms pac. It had a monitor issue I did not know how to fix, so I took it to a guy that could. You win some, you lose some kind of thing. I've fixed everything else on my ms pac monitor and now I know how to fix the thing I couldn't.

You just need to have people in your back pocket to take your monitors to when you can't fix them, that's all really.

Between this forum and the monitor forum @ BYOAC, these really are the best forums for monitor repair.

As said by toolguy, even though you couldn't do it doesn't make this a crappy forum.

And trashing the monitors because you couldn't fix them? That's just a shame.

Sometimes just buying a working chassis makes sense. If there's something odd that's hard to diagnose, you can buy a working one, do a cap kit, and it will 'probably' last a long time. That's often cheaper than actually sending out for a repair, then paying return shipping on top of the repair bill.

And then you can sell the old one

Most of the time - guys like me and some of the others here can fix your broken chassis and the cost and time of doing so (with shipping) is worth a lot less than the weeks or months you mess with it yourself. They say time is money. What's your time worth? If you can budget $100 to get a completely working monitor within a week or two (from shipped to returned), and you're back up and playing, is that not better than pulling your hair out for two months, throwing it in the garbage, then spending $100+ on an LCD and adapter that won't ever look as good as the original, and probably won't last as long as a properly re-built crt?

mod, meet Brick Wall.

I had a Polo that crapped out on me, had another guy local that happened to be selling a 25" CGA, and I got on the phone with him immediately after the Polo died. $150 later, I have another monitor in my ranks, that does CGA/EGA.

you're in NY, I'm sure you have the same hookup lying around somewhere. repairs generally go smoother in my experience when you have a working replacement part that gets the game running again, and you have less pressure to fix the broken item. next thing you know, you got a known working one, and a solid backup that can potentially be used for sale/trade fodder down the road.

that's how the hobby works. my hobby incidentally is also my job, so maybe I view it a little different than your average KLOVer.

So basically this guy is saying he is destroying his monitors because no one will hold his hand on repairs. Basically saying he is punishing everyone for not helping his sorry ass enough and then bashing this forum as being lame. Well Darin, let me get you a nice hot cup of go f yourself.

And to clarify. I haven't yet trashed my monitors. There is only one day for recycling every week, and I had put them out. But got a message from someone in regard to trying to fix them again. So we'll see how that goes.

Contrary to what the ass-wipe above says, this has nothing to do with me "punishing everyone" or looking for someone to "hold my hand". It's no more complicated than me running out of room. And I did not bash this forum. I simply asked for another forum where they discuss monitor repair. Why do certain individuals have to read as much negativity into everything they can?

And I still have no intention of sending these monitors to anyone.(Unless it's a straight up trade deal).

Thanks.

I'll trade you cash for the shipping it takes to send any G07, 4900, or 4600 (complete) chassis to me that you would normally throw away or recycle. I do not want the tubes or yokes....
