I just converted a hacked scramble cabinet into a 60 in 1.
I was thinking of having the joystick and trackball on the top of the control panel and the shoot/jump buttons on the side. I thought about putting the shoot/jump buttons on each side of the control panel so the player can choose which side they want to use. I guess the 1 and 2 player start can go on top.
Any thoughts on this setup.

drill out a 1x8 board and try it out.

i went through a lot of variations on a multi-control panel, thinking this or that sounded smart and when i actually tried it out, it wasn't. better to try on a test board than the real deal.

if you are suggesting having the shoot and jump buttons on the side of hte cabinet, that would be a bad idea in my opinion. There wasn't a video game ever made that did that.

You should make a new control panel instead of butchering that one. try to center the joystick as much as possible since all of the pac's played that way. squeeze the trackball off to the right, and try to find room for 2 buttons on either side of the joystick.

there may not be room on a control panel as small as scramble.

Is this game for you or to sell?

Space is limited. Unless you're putting 2 joysticks on it also, I'd just go with a standard layout like joystick off-center left, trackball off-center right, 3 buttons in the middle, and 2 start button off to one side. Kind of like this:
