So I was going through my boards and found "Pit-fighter", it had a konami sticker on there but the board was clearly labeled pit-fighter and had atari roms(atari made pitfighter). I fired it up and didn't get anything(Didn't expect to, was untested). So I reseated all the roms and cleaned a few dirty ones and it was in test mode..sweet, found the test mode switch and the crap came right up. It didn't look so bad at first but damn...I was wrong. This game is awful! I invite you guys to try it out in mame :). Happy to get a board working...sad for it to be so bad, hardly worth my time.

Have there been any games that have disappointed you?

You are just to young to understand. I remember the first time I played it I was in awe of the amazing graphics of the game.

I don't mind mortal kombat graphics etc, but pitfighter is just all around bad IMO.

Well Pit fighter is 2 years older than mortal kombat ;)

The game play may not have been the best but it was a great time with 2 friends trying to get to the end. Then you had to fight against those 2 people until only the best player was left to fight the boss. There really wasn't another game like it at the time. Soon after though games like Street fighter, mortal kombat/ killer instinct, time killers, ect started to fill arcades.

I remember that too, the graphics were great for the time. Then I remember dropping 2 tokens in it and being in awe of how horrible the gameplay was. There's something in here about a polished turd but I'm not coming up with anything witty enough. I'd track it down in MAME but I think even the "well at least I'm not paying to play this" factor would make it any more tolerable.

I was amazed at the graphics of Pit Fighter when I first saw it in the arcade in 1990 or so. It looked like live-action video almost. After playing it, I truly understood the concept of:

Great Graphics ≠ Great Gameplay

And I've used Pit Fighter as the defining example of that concept ever since.

lol pit fighter.. I was about to trade for a jamma cab and I knew the guy had a pit fighter, as soon as he said he had a tekken cabinet I jumped on that because even the cabinet is awful for pit fighter haha. I watched a youtube video of it, hillarious

I've always thought the game was downright awful -- from its release to present day.

As bad as it was/is BITD it got quite a bit of play. The cabinet is a beast for sure.
It broke ground for using digitized images. I would probably have one if the price was right (dedicated machine). :)

Pit Fighter is now only good for using as a JAMMA test board. No use keeping something as a test board that others may want to buy, so use what nobody wants...

I remember seeing Pit Fighter when it was new as well. The way it looked for the time was incredible. I stood there with a crowd and just watch people play it. Its funny how such relatively minor things could be so ground breaking. I remember Xevious being the first game where things actually appeared to be made out of metal.

Probably in the minority, but I consider Dragons Lair just as bad. Talk about all looks and no substance.

I liked Pit-Fighter. I remember when it first came out in the arcades I would play it with my brother. Once you get used to the bad controls it's a lot of fun. The graphics were amazing back then.

Pit Fighter was amazing when it came out in the arcade. Just thinking about it brings me vividly back to being in the dark Gold Mine arcade. The sights, the sounds...it's all so clear. Now granted, I didn't play pit fighter a whole lot. The older kids were always playing, and I loved just watching. The grudge matches were always hilarious when you had a crowd of people watching and interacting.

Thanks for the great flashback. Sorry you missed out on the true arcade scene.

I think I said something like what you said before Endrien, and before me someone else said it end before that....

I remeber when it just hit the arcades, how those sprites moved and how they jumped, well it wasn't actually jumping, more like moving a peice of cardboard up and down.
I tried it with the little money I had because I thought, well it looks bad but maybe the gameplay is nice.

I soon found out I was completely wrong.
AND..... This game has nothing to do with Mortal Kombat, MK is not inspired by it nor wouldn't there have been a MK without Pit Fighter.. NO, NO and NO.
The only thing is that it featured digitised sprites but that's it!!!

Pit fighter is one of the hardest ass sucking games in the history of arcade machines IMO.

But the big question remains: Endrien do you own a Gals Panic ???

I think I played pit fighter maybe 4 times back in the day... every few months I'd get sucked in by the graphics, and then promptly get reminded that I didn't like the game play.

As was said earlier, that cabinet truly was a beast! A friend of mine has a Pit Fighter cabinet that he has converted to a Tetris. If I recall correctly, the cabinet has a nice drawer arrangement that allows for easy swapping of boards. He sometimes runs Rampart in it as well..

I wonder if anyone has a dedicated Pit Fighter up and running in their collection... hmm, time to check VAPS.

Followup--64 instances of Pit Fighter on VAPS. 9 in dedicated cabinets, 2 conversions, and 53 as board only. Looks like a lot of people are using it as their JAMMA test board! heheh..
