I know that, legally speaking, piracy does not qualify as theft. I just meant that they are tantamount to the same thing.

I just don't understand how anyone could think piracy is alright or that it is a victimless crime (and I'm not saying you think that). I would really be interested to hear someone's rationale as to why piracy is ok. No pirate has ever given me a reason. They just think they're entitled.

He actually hasn't engaged in any discussion. All he ever says is "get over it". I truly am very interested as to why pirates feel they should have games for free. I'm not saying that sarcastically. I really want to know. No one has ever given me an answer to that.

I think you already know the answer, and you touched on several different reasons earlier. One of those was when you mentioned the consequences of a pirate's actions. For the vast majority of people who download games without paying, there are no consequences; assuming you have no moral qualms, there's no compelling reason not to at that point.

I don't think you'll find anyone that thinks they should have games for free. I also don't think it equates to theft when someone pirates a game. You may find people who think they paid plenty for the hardware and can't afford all the games they want so they justify their software piracy.

I'm wondering why this topic has you so enraged? Are you sure you are pure enough to justify your anger and insults? Never played a game in MAME (or any emulator for that matter)? Never played on a multi-board? Never played a multi-game kit? Never used a high score save mod? Never bought repro graphics? Never had a mp3/tape/backup copy of anything? Never had any pirated software on any computer that you used? I don't think there is any grey area here - if you've had one item that's not original then you are as dirty as the guy with 1000s of pirated games.

My MAME machine is loaded with everything because I will never be able to afford and house all the arcade games I love to play or games I just try out because I never have seen the machines in person and never will. Do I think I should have all these games for free? No. Do I feel bad because I've played them? No. Did I steal something or take money out of someone's pocket because I didn't buy them? No.

The bottom line is you'll never get an answer you like to your question on piracy from payment_due or anyone. Let it go.

Sure, I mentioned that I had a pirated copy of a game. But that wasn't the cause of the constant whining by nfciala. His need for justification of someone else's actions are what caused it. I'm not the one that needs to step back from anything, all I've done is pretty much ignored him, although I have enjoyed the benefit of him losing his shit over it.

Why I 'bothered' to report the thread is because he is being an insolent jackass that resorted to hurling insults when someone didn't want to stoop to his level, bitching and moaning about something that can never be changed.

That is one thing I've noticed about some pirates though. They think they're clever. They think they're so clever that they should just get the software for free. But being clever isn't justification for stealing. Even if it was, you don't have to be clever these days to pirate software. Anyone can do it.

There is a clear difference between having a rom of a game that is no longer comercially available and pirating a game that is sitting new on store shelves. The latter takes money out of the developers' pockets while the former does not. I know both would legally be considered piracy, but I'm not arguing from a legal standpoint, I'm arguing from a moral standpoint. Once you have deprived someone of their right to profit from their labor, a wrong has been committed.
