EDIT BY MATTROID: Starting this thread since there's a debate on piracy going on right now. This really isn't the place for this, so this thread will likely be closed and/or deleted soon. However, if you have some civil debating to add, go for it. This is something everyone on here should have an opinion about, but try to keep it civil. For reference, this began in the Castlevania: LoS thread. The related posts were moved here.

eye. roll.

You have a nice attitude about stealing intellectual property from people who work extremely hard making games so that you can enjoy them. Do you shoplift too, because it is absolutely no different.

What is with pirates? They always seem to have this child-like attitude that they are just entitled to everything for free. The bottom line is this. If you play the games you should support the industry that makes them.

Actually, no I don't have an attitude. But thanks. The fact that the game is pirated has NOTHING to do with what I said. It doesn't change the fact that it's not a very good game, that it's disjointed, boring in parts and that it doesn't feel like a Castlevania game.

Put your prententiousness to better use please.

You didn't answer my question as to whether or not you shoplift. I can only assume the answer is yes. You also put forth no argument as to why you and others like you are entitled to the fruits of others' labors for free.

Being against theft doesn't make someone pretentious. But being for theft makes you a monumental douchebag. Now, do you want to complain about how shitty some other game you stole is?

once again - eye. roll.

Yet again.

eye roll.

What the hell does that even supposed to mean? That you're incapable of writing a complete sentence?

All you have to do is answer this question. What entitles you to others' intellectual property for free? I'm anxiously waiting for another of your oh so witty replies.

Not to give the guy an out, but as I've said before, I've pirated games in order to test them out before I buy. But if I enjoy a game, I always buy it - my stacks of games can attest to that.

Of course, I have no way to pirate a 360 game. In fact, I think the only current gen systems I've ever pirated anything for was PSP and DS. I don't think anyone mods a 360 just to "try before they buy."

I'm not saying what I've done is "okay" either...hell, some argue that I should be giving rental places my money...I don't know about that though :p

It means that I couldn't possibly care less that some guy on the internet gets all huffy about the fact that I pirate games.

There are people on this site that make their living creating these games. Others on here run shops, and/or make their living selling these games. Talking about blatantly pirating games, that were just released, doesn't really come across in a glowing manner.

I don't expect you to care what I, or anyone else for that matter, thinks. I do expect you to care that you are stealing from people. Although I guess I should know by now that there are some people, make that many people, with no morals.

What do you do for a living? Do you make or help make a product? Do you sell a product? Do you provide a service? Why don't you just give it away for free? How would you feel if someone took advantage of what you do and then refused to pay for it?

Hey, remember I said I don't care?

You don't care that you steal from people? Yeah, I think I got that.

I don't know about the mods here, but I think even talking about pirating here should be an offense worthy of being banned, at least temporarily. This is a site dedicated to video games. The people in the industry, and there are some of those very people here, put their blood, sweat, and tears into these games so that we can enjoy them. If you don't want to support them then you have no right to play. Software piracy is no different than shoplifting or hiring someone to perform a service and not paying them.

im not defending anyone, but theres thousands of people who pirate movies, games, music etc. Dont let one guy get the best of you. state your beliefs and end it. no use fighting over something your not gonna change.

I agree. There's no real reason to get your panties in a wad.

On the other hand, something ncfiala said did resonate with me - bannable offenses. I wonder if thread derailing is another offense? You pretty much shit all over gutsman's thread over there, so much so that this thread had to be created by a mod.

You should be more considerate. I mean really.

For the record, piracy is NOT stealing. Piracy does not deprive the victim of any tangible property, which is why this is a different crime to theft/larceny. Piracy is copyright infringement. Making a copy of a DVD and stealing that DVD are two completely separate things.

It is because the party against which the offense is committed is usually none the wiser, or is a faceless third party, eg compared to how a victim would notice if you stole their property eg a car, most people see piracy as a victimless crime.

I'm a bit tired of the entertainment industry crying poor and saying that every pirated game or DVD is a lost sale. It just isn't, most of those people probably would not have bought the original anyway, or do buy it at a later date. I haven't seen any figures on what % of pirated games resulted in a lost sale, or a deferred sale, but I bet the number of lost sales is a pretty low percentage.

But by the same token, I am sick to death with all the anti-copying measures we now have to put up with as a result. Piracy is killing the PC gaming market, pure and simple. PC games are now pretty much restricted to online FPS shooters, and MMOs, where you need a valid key and online account to play. They mostly all use online activation and license control.

Even consoles are now being designed increasingly around online components, micro-transactions and downloadable content, to keep the consoles tethered to an online service where the consoles now receive regular updates that break not just console mods that enable piracy, but homebrew as well. They're now heading down the path of doing this to stop not only piracy, but to deter lucrative 2nd hand game sales as well.

You reap what you sow...

To be fair, you should have expected something like this when you posted:
lol i would sell it gutsman but its not.. a 'real' copy.
It's common knowledge on these boards that piracy is a hot topic (as well it should be) which doesn't sit well with many people. You could have either ignored the request to buy the game or stated something else to not divulge that you were pirating the game. As they say in Law & Order, "You opened the door."

I know that, legally speaking, piracy does not qualify as theft. I just meant that they are tantamount to the same thing.

I just don't understand how anyone could think piracy is alright or that it is a victimless crime (and I'm not saying you think that). I would really be interested to hear someone's rationale as to why piracy is ok. No pirate has ever given me a reason. They just think they're entitled.

I wouldn't say that members as a whole here avoid piracy like the plague. Some members here make a good bit of money selling the shit out of those multiboards. That's essentially piracy, right? Then there's MAME.

Ah, right. Just like he could have put on his bigboy pants and just ignored it, but rather decided to go on a little tirade about it? Sure maybe the door was opened, but he busted it down.
