I just salvaged this jukebox. Everything is working as far as lights ,coin mech ,bill validator, etc. When I load a couple of cds in it and initialize it it goes through all the discs but then still will not let me make any selections. When I push a number it just beeps and cancel lights up at the same time. If anyone out there has any experience with these I would appreciate the input

Odds are good that one, or all, of the cd players are dead. When it ran the init, it didn't "see" the cd's and thus won't let you select them.

Did you try both players? Or if you are lucky enough to have the 3rd player, try the 3rd one?

You can pull the top of the player off and watch to make sure the cd loads properly, sometimes those players did have mechanical issues. But the most common failures are pickups (laser) or spindle motors and parts are impossible to find these days.

Be wary of the changers that pop up on ebay from time to time, they usually don't work.

My suggestion, if this box is for HOME USE only, go the mp3 adapter route: http://www.cdadapter.com/pio-mp3.htm
It works great and IMO is the best way to keep one of these boxes going.

There are 3 in this unit..one jams when it tries to read the first magazine. I opened up and watched the other 2 and they run through all the discs. Pull it all the way in give a weak little spin and put it back. I kind of suspect like you say that considering they are almost 20 years old the laser in them are dead. I saw the conversion kit and think it is great. Guess I need to start saving my pennies.

Words spoken right out of my mouth. Go for the Cdadapter kit these Jukes have awesome sound and are smaller and lighter than the others. They are truly a great investment if you put the HD in them for home use. Good luck.

Thanks for the thread guys. I bought a CJ-V55 at the last SuperAuction.

I think I got hosed. Before the auction, it was playing (they had a CD in the first slot) and two other units around the corner weren't. When they went to auction the jukes, the two around the corner were playing and the one I bought wasn't plugged in. When I got it home and opened it up I got similar symptoms to gfish and the CD that was in unit 1 (actually labelled unit3) is dead. I pulled the case and get no movement at all when powering it up. Just as icing, the CD that was in Unit 1 as a demo didn't match the label that was in the display rack. So I am suspecting that the seller swapped the working one in mine for one of the dead ones. Grrrrrrrrr  But as they say, buyer beware!

I just put an order in for the MP3 player. After looking at the specs on it, I think it is a better value anyway. You get 54 albums of up to 99 songs (5,346 songs). I think that will cover most of my wife's collection and a good chunk of mine too.

When the box initializes it runs thru all slots, one at a time, loads whatever is in the slot, reads the cd and stores the number of tracks on that cd in it's memory. By doing this the box knows which slots actually contain cd's and how many tracks each cd has. This is done so that the user can only select cd's and track numbers that actually exist.

During the init sequence if the cd doesn't load into the player, the cd doesn't spin, or the pickup has failed it will look like an empty slot to the central computer as it won't "see" that a cd has loaded and been read. Then the juke will have that slot flagged as empty and if you attempt to select that cd the display will indicate "cancel" and make no attempt to play it. If the player is bad then you can see how all the cd's in that player will get flagged as empty or non-playable.

Diagnosing the problem down to the laser is often not helpfull since parts are virtually impossible to find anyway. You can pull the top cover off and watch the mech to see if it is loading the cd onto the player, mechanical issues with the loading can sometimes be fixed with some cleaning and light lubrication. If it loads the cd onto the player, yet won't play any cd's, then the prognosis isn't good, likely the pickup has failed and you are SOL anyway so further testing isn't going to matter too much.

WOW thankyou I get it now. I do have one unit that does load it give it a small spin and puts it back but if I try to select it it wont do it. Thats why I was thinking the laser was dead like a few people have said.I have 2 other units. One unit said it was checked in year 2000 and laser was strong and at 100% that unit now doesnt do anything totally dead so i thought I could try that laser in the other box that does all the checks.the only problem is I DONT KNOW WHAT A LASER LOOKS LIKE :( or where its located.I removed 4 screws on the player and disconnected the ribbon and lifted the unit out that it looks like the cd spins over but didnt see a lense but saw a circle with glue residue so I'm wondering if the lense fell off over time if that truly is where the laser is located. I guess I need a picture of one of these units with an arrow pointing to where the laser lense should be then I would know for sure. Tonight I'm going to take apart a second unit and see if one looks different then the other :)
