PinWiki, The New Place For Everything Pinball

Note that there are several veteran RGP members, including several of the folks who have submitted contact to the www.pinrepair.com site in the past, are already organizing and discussing the creation of a replacement resource. Deep talent pool there to pull from, so you may want to try working with them instead.

Any possibility of you directing them my way? I don't have a google account to post on RGP and have no desire to give google more info.

Umm you should. I don't think they are going to go out of their way to find you just because of you having the pinwiki domain name.

I will allow it for now as long as any info grabbed from there is clearly marked as from there. I don't want copyright issues, and if something arises i want to be able to delete it easily.

I highly recommend against allowing anyone's copyrighted content of any sort without their permission. If you're going to try doing this "right," every submitter should attest that their submission is THEIR property (their words, not lifted verbatim from elsewhere... ideas, concepts, and facts can't be copyrighted). To ensure long-lived freedom of the information, follow the Linux/GPL/Copyleft/Wikipedia models. In those projects, many contributers can collaborate to create and maintain bodies of work which are free for everyone. Contaminating it at the onset with Clay's content would be a BAD idea (IMHO). If there are bits that others (like the earlier poster) claim ownership of, and wish to share freely, GREAT... post it. But I'd suggest that the way to go forward with the repair guides is to re-write them from scratch, and get new photos taken (by people who will release them under an appropriate open license). Clay's guides can be used as a reference/source, but not lifted wholesale. Paraphrase. Add new, original, thoughts. Combine with information from other sources. ...but please, don't just put Clay's content up hopelessly mixed with other truly free content. That would defeat the purpose of creating an alternative.

Yes, it will be a lot of work to "do it right."

Um, usenet isn't owned nor controlled by Google, and a google account isn't required to post to usenet.

You may, however, need a newsreader program and an NNTP server.

I guessmi should clarify what I meant by using pin repair.com info. If you properly referred to sources for information to apply to writing new articles. Even if someone only looks over an article written by pin repair.com I would like it be noted that it was done. On the other hand I absolutely do not want copy and pasted articles. I really need to be done for the night as you can see I'm starting to talk mush.

To clarify.....no copyrighted material!

Yeah cause it's so fun to dig through random posts, with random explanations of problems AND solutions rather than have something definitive to look at...

That's like saying "Why bother making the Haynes Auto Repair manuals?" on a car enthusiast forum...

i like stickies like this
http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=177192
very informative

and this one

dont forget this one
http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=111041

and another

eventually there will be more of them im hoping

I agree that you need to get on RGP and discuss this with Mario (pinthetic) or we'll end up with two competing Wikis. You've already done a lot of the heavy lifting to get this going.

I briefly looked at the About page and Privacy Policy last night and I didn't see any mention of how content will be licensed. Will it be Creative Commons Attribution-Sharealike and GFDL like Wikipedia?

Thanks for reminding me about that part, and yes it will be.

Thanks to the power of sleep, I posted on RGP. Hopefully, spiteful people can populate the wiki.

Any suggestions on the best choice for licensing the information? Should I just use the same one as what wikipedia uses?

I'm not a pro on licensing, and there are so many options out there that it makes your head swim. However, I think the license(s) that Wikipedia uses are pretty well tested and appear to work. Someone could spend as much time figuring this out as writing the pin content for the Wiki. ;)

The main thing to keep in mind about RGP is that there is no "troll control" like you find at a moderated forum. You have to be a duck when you go over there and be ready to let things slide off your back. But there's a lot of good info and helpful people there if you are wiling to put up with some of the BS.

It looks like you will get a lot of great techs to help you. Ken has lots of knowledge, and Rob (Borygard) is a whiz at board repair. How will you moderate what is changed/uploaded/removed? It needs to be restricted access somehow. Otherwise some idiot could put some horrible advice in there.

I decided already to just used the same license as Wikipedia. Very straight forward and applicable to PinWiki.

I do not currently have any moderators but I am actively seeking 1-3 people to help out with that aspect. Now, I'm going to do my best to make sure all information is good on the wiki, but I will need help.

P.S. Anybody interested in becoming a moderator, please contact me through pm on here or on the PinWiki forums.

P.S.S. Anyone interested in making some logos for PinWiki?

This looks like it's going to be awesome.

Do you need a separate login/registration for the forum? Or am I just having problems?

Sadly, yes. Mediawiki and PHPBB do not play together nicely. I do plan to eventually investigate into what I can do to link them but with the urgency to get the site up and running they are not linked together.
