It is just me, or do you guys actually "feel" the machine and "connect" to it?
So many times people play my machines and never seem to experience what I do.
I can't be the only one. Does anyone here actually connect to the machine to actually experience something that maybe only "we" do?
You know, that ball that does everything you want or envision...often times followed by a lame ball, but...do you know what I mean?
I'm the only pinhead I know, so I have nobody to ask this to!!!

I'm a chronic "in the zone" guy. I'll have that one awesome ball, then eat dirt the rest of the game. Doesn't apply just to pinball, either. Case in point, I decided to play Dodonpachi (sp?) whatever uber-hard-ass shmup from Cave the other day on someone's MAME rig. I've never played it before. Had a zen moment on one life and was like bullets from enemies didn't exist. I flew literally through walls of enemy fire and did not die. :p

I think it happens more with pinball, but definitely not just pinball. :)

i know what you mean. i have games when the rest of the world seems to disappear. its only me and the game. its a great feeling.i think that's why some refer to this hobby as the sickness.

I totally get that. It is usually when your day just hasn't been going your way or something, and you get that emotional release on the machine. It either leads to a fantastic game or the worst game. Another way you sometimes get that's if you have been awake for a really really long time, your senses are getting weaker so you have to focus hard on the pinball and the rest of the world ceases to exist. There is a balance point in that method because sooner or later the ball becomes hard to track, and it's time to call it a night.

Or is it just being more skilled? I think it's both, plus knowing the machine well enough to know it's quirks helps too.
After I posted the question I went upstairs to play High Speed. I had two unbelievable balls, each yielding two extra balls and I rolled the score over! It was a rush, I ended up at 11 million plus. Too bad that ten million doesn't show up on the back glass...
It gave me the high game, but only registers 9,999,999 on the high score. It sure looks pretty bitchin' though!!!
That game was so satisfying that I shut her down, and retired game play for the night! Always exit the room on a high note...

Skill really does play into it, especially on a game like High Speed. If you can keep getting the freeway values you will rack a sweet score very easily.

I totally agree. If im not "into" a game, it probably isn't going to be a good one. That doesn't mean I won't enjoy it, it's just that it will probably be a crappy score. I think alcohol helps get you into the game, up until a certain point, then I just start playing crappy again :)

HA! I love alcohol, but not when playing. I like to be sharp as a tack when I play for full enjoyment, but will also play under the influence.
I've got my back leg levelers almost all the way up, so my games play fast, hence me wanting to be sober when I want to play seriously...

PS: I play under the influence most of the time!!!

pinhead

ya Im a pinhead, the other night I was having my best game Ive had on TOM, my girlfriend was making fun of me and yanked down my shorts and underware just as I got into the grand finaly, first time I had been there. So while she is laughing at me, and my kids were expected to show up at any minute for xmas eve party there I am battling away with my pants around my ankles. I didnt move, finished the game with 1.9 Billion. thats hardcore pin action!

I know I "became one" with the machine a couple of weeks ago when I was on my Gladiators machine. It was ball 2 and the ball would not drain. Every shot I made counted and I tuned out of everything else around me. Then the right flipper stuck in the up position and ruined the game. Talk about snapping out of it and crashing to the ground!!

I love that feeling. That zen moment when nothing else could possibly bother you. Had that feeling many times. My best was when I broke 1 billion on my Getaway machine. Had the score on there for years until I changed the batteries. Had the game on, replaced the batteries, turned game off. Next time I turned it on the score (and all my settings) were gone. One of the battery connectors didn't make contact when I put it back together. Best I can do now is 500 million. Oh well, it was the feeling that counted.
