finally figured it out.
when i was going in to attempt to bend the switch "hook arm" i noticed that i couldn't feel the thing, like i could on the other side. so on a whim i searched around in the bottom of the box with a light and there it was, laying there.
i think these "arms" are supposed to hook in, but there's no hook on the one end, so this must have snapped off somehow. looks like i'll be ordering a replacement. at least they're cheap.
any hints on replacing one of those switches? seems fairly simple, just unscrew the bolts, unsolder, solder in the new one and bolt it back in. any other tips?
