Pinball vs. Vid: Which rules and why?

Two totally different things, but for me personally, I'd say vids for variety, nostalgia factor and cost.

I love pins, but man are they expensive and they seem way harder to maintain. I'm not that great at them, but I do hope to own a couple someday.

+1

I'll have a pin or two in the future, when I can afford one.

Oh this is good. Real good. Great thread. I'm a vid guy. I didn't really play pins as a youth. I knew of them, just never played them. I own one now, and thought about adding a few more, but never got around to it. In contrast, I own 30 vids. Vids bring back the memories, are easier to restore and maintain, and more fun to play for me. I have played a few of the newer pins like LOTR, T2 and Addams Family, but the newer pins don't feel as physical to me as the SS or EM ones did. Too many motorized, mechanized and energized toys for my tastes. I would take a fully restored Gorgar in a heartbeat though. I have nothing against hardcore pin guys, but I do have a problem with the recent rash of hardcore vid-turned-hardcore pin guys. Guys that constantly rip on video games and have to remind everyone how much more they like pins than vids, how great pins are, how everybody plays their pins when they come over, how they just shopped their OMGWTFBBQPENIS (I do hate the pin abbreviations with a passion), how they are selling their remaining vids to make room for more pins, etc. Even you have to agree that those dudes get annoying.

Why do they have to fight? I like both. Most of the games I regularly play I do so for nostalgia reasons. Old Chicago (pin) reminds me of the pins I used to play at the KOA's and Clowns (vid) reminds me of games I used to play on my Atari 2600.

Me too. I don't have any conscious memories of pinball as a kid beyond the pitch & bat I played in the ice cream shop as a really young kid and that wasn't even a true pinball. Video Arcade games are a whole other story. Lots of sentiment there.

It wasn't until I got my first pin that I started to appreciate pinball and even then it was years later before I became a real "pin guy" and less of a "vid guy".

Shameless plug: I discuss this in my silverball podcast interview.

Keep your eyes open. I would expect that you can find yourself a decent deal on a Gorgar eventually if you keep your ear to the ground. Then again... maybe you just don't care enough and that's cool too. If your passion is vids then full steam ahead, captain.

They're definitely easier to restore. A lot cheaper too. That's a big factor for a lot of people (me too). The "more fun" part is really tough to debate unless we're talking specific titles but I would say that I generally enjoy pinball more, with select few exceptions.

You should pick up a good EM. Should be available as cheap or cheaper than a decent vid. Maybe not in "KLOV price" world but reality should prove me to be only semi-full-of-shit.

I would take a fully restored Gorgar in a heartbeat though.

Let me know when you want to pick it up. I sold the last one for $1250. Special KLOV discount just for you ;)

Agreed. Somewhat annoying. I own both but I'm definitely moving in a strictly pinball direction. Live and let live. That's what I always say ;)

I enjoy them both, and agree that pins are a different animal, certainly the two I own, Last Action Hero and Mario Andretti are. As far as which is more popular in my house, the vids get turned on prolly 5 times to 1 time for the pins. But when I have gatherings, the pins get the same amount of love as the vids, especially from the ladies. It is importatnt that the pins are functioning properly when I have a party.

ha ha during said parties I offer $25.00 to anyone who can get on the high score board for Robotron - which would require a minimum score of +420,000.. Haven't paid out yet, but havent had a fellow KLOVer in attendance yet either :D

Not bad for fully restored. Luckily, my heart beats only once every 5 years, so I have some time to decide. Gorgar, what a great pin.

I was around in the pre-video game days, so pins are the real nostalga for me. I have quite a few video games too, for nostalgia reasons, mainly because I worked on them or play tested them or know the programmers. And a few just for fun.

I don't have any EM pins because the amount of moving parts in them scare me. I have one working and 3 project SS pins. The working one is a MataHari that was a crossover pin (I have the SS version). It is very cool because it still has the old mechanical xylophone for sounds like the EMs did, but it is solid state, so it is much easier to maintain.

I don't see that there is any conflict. Sometimes I feel like a quick game of "God do I suck at this game" so I'll play Stargate or Defender and sometimes I'll feel like playing a game where you get to loose yourself in the game and I'll crank up the MataHari.

We all allready had this discussion once, why do it all over again??

Ok I'll say the same that I said last time and keep in mind that I think pins are allright, loved cyclone (ride the ferris wheel!!) , Earthshaker!!!, Start Wars (shoot the death star!!) and Tommy rocked my world.
Love a good multiball so I'm not someone that never played a pinball machine but it was like this in the 80's and it still is nowadays:

Pins = Stone Age.
Videogame = Future!!!!

Vids rule period!!

I like both. Vids mainly because they are extremely reasonable as far as price goes. But you need to have at least one or two pins to make everyone happy. :)

Phases is about all I can come up with. I look at my beautiful little Kong family and see my fresh Robotron and I think .. "that's awesome". And then I don't play em ..... WTF?????
I have 3 pins now. Just had a small get together this past weekend and surprisingly enough the kids played EVERYTHING that was there. The adults only played pins. Phases I'm guessing we all go through. When you're border line bored of your vids and you find something different you get that new and exciting feeling you used to get with vids.

For now I much more enjoy my pins over the vids.

I have to go with the video games. Just don't like the maintenance on the pins. That really is a personal preference though. I could see how some folks would like the mechanical aspects of the pins more.

It isn't an OR type question. I have to say that I play my pins more than the vids. But for nostalgia the vids have it hands down.

Love some of the modern sterns as much as the old school games. Family guy and pirates of the Carribean are 2 of my favorite machines period. Tron, donkey kong, and galaga still hold a great deal of appeal as well. Of all the games in my collection the last machine I would sell is my POTC pinball. Pinballs are expensive, require more upkeep, but no game is ever the same.

I enjoy them both, but it all really boils down to the title and what trips your trigger.

I like pins, and I wish I could afford a few more, but I think I like the vids more. The pin snobs do get out of control sometimes. I have local friends that just can't grasp why I would waste money on vids. I just played them more. The only pins I played a lot were High Speed (which I have), pinbot(one of these days), and STTNG (which I wish I could afford). I don't know the rules on any of the others, so I just try to keep the ball in play, which makes them all pretty similar.

The battle between pins and vids to me is petty and stupid. They are both amusement machines. Both cost money to play.(not on free play of course) Each require maintenance and occasional repairs. Either can be,and usually is,very costly to restore to their former glory. So to me they are more alike than not.

With that said,I think both are really cool and I enjoyed playing both growing up.While I don't own a pin I would love to eventually get one,but that will be when I have lots of extra space and cash.Until then I will stick to buying vids.

I couldn't imagine having one without the other. Always wanted to add a few pins to the collection and I got to add 2 this year! Thought briefly about getting rid of a few vids to make room for some more pins but glad I didn't.
