If someone leans on your "ordinary" plate playfield glass, they can easily break right through it, injuring themselves substantially, and damaging the playfield as well as the glass breaks into long, incredibly sharp pieces - like falling into a bathtub of knives.

I just get mine at a local glass shop, worked out great was like 30-40 bucks, make sure they don't put any brand markings on it.
You can not cut tempered glass. First they cut the glass to size then temper it.I often see pins come in with regular plate glass. They chip easily, the edges aren't polished so you typically get small cuts on the hands when handling it, and putting some pressure on it from above can easily cause it to bust.
I've even seen them come in with plexi/lexan replacements.
I'd take the old one to a glass shop and have them cut you a new piece of tempered glass...
That is why it costs more, It is not done at a a glass shop.
