pinball arcade - TZ kickstarter program

I was a bit irked when I saw they were doing a kickstarter. Mostly because I would bet that they are doing pretty darn well selling these fantastic virtual tables across so many platforms. Then I saw they need $55K just for the licenses and if you donate you get a free copy of the game. Plunked the money down on the barrel head.

And it seems that it will be released on the PC in a couple months. I doubt it will ever come out for linux, but anything is better than my tiny phone.

Thanks for sharing that.. I love TZ and I love the Pinball arcade app.. very much! I donated some money and hope others do the same! Having TZ on my iPhone and iPad would be absolutely insane!!

Pay me to make something to sell to you

My first thought was : "Awesome, they're finally going to port TZ."

And then I see they're asking for money.

Are you friggin' serious?! This little pissant company has made MILLIONS upon millions from their Pinball Arcade and Pinball Hall Of Fame titles. And it's still pouring in daily thanks to iProduct and Android kiddos. And they want ME to pay for the development of the game, and then sell me the game I paid to develop?! Absolutely ridiculous.

They can reinvest their own profits, or get bent.

yeah. don't get this argument. at all.

companies are in it to make a profit...not to please you. or me. if they have a target that they need/want to reach in order to proceed with a project, that's on them. that's their decision.

they are taking it to the players....if the players want to be able to play TZ in digital form on their console, phone, tablet, or whatever, then they can pledge a donation. if not, the table doesn't get made. period.

I'm not sure what the hubbub here is. If you have an issue with their business model then don't support it, or the kickstarter.

The licensing fees are 55k. They're asking for people to chip in because of the exorbitant (by dead license standards..) fee. 10$, you get TZ if they make it. I think the higher up rewards are a bit silly for what you're putting in, yes, but 10$ to be able to play TZ forever on your PS3? Come on. That's like buying a few pinballs.

You don't even pay unless it meets its goal, and they've already said if it goes past the goal they're going to try to use it to partially or fully fund OTHER licenced tables that would have high fees as well. Looks like they want to go after STTNG, which I wholeheartedly support, even though I own the game.

So what's the beef....you guys can pony up ludicrous cash to parts dealers and vendors that only give you small pieces of a working machine for 10$, but to get a copy of this table on your platform except 360 (Microsoft a$$#0l3$...Thank christ my pinball arcade is on my PS3...) for that much money is absurd?

I honestly think they've been MORE than fair with their current pricing of 2.50/game. I talked to one of the developers at TPF and it seemed like they were going to be more expensive than that. You want to bitch at someone, go bitch at CBS and Rod Sirling's estate. It's not like they're not standing to make a profit off essentially NOTHING @ 55k off the top and probably a cut of each future sale? Come on.

Do I think it's worth their time and money to self-fund development of this table when there's so many others out there that are worthy and don't have this kind of BS attached to them? Not really....but I hope it does get funded, and my 10$ will be in, because I wish to see these kinds of tables get done in the future. I think it would be awesome to be able to get something like TSPP or Spider-Man in the future.

agree 100% with your entire post.

i have to point out though, that the TZ table, if it gets made, will most definitely be available as DLC on the xbox360....it's just that the way MS points are set up, that the developers cannot offer a free TZ table as a reward on that platform. i'm sure you understood this, but as there seems to be a bit of confusion (from here as well as on the kickstarter page), i thought i'd attempt to clear that up.

i've already pledged and i would hope anyone that values pin preservation in the digital realm would do so as well. sure, there are unofficial "ports" via visualpinball/etc.....but this is going to be an official treatment of the table.

and again, if this project doesn't hit the goal, we're never going to see licensed pins be official ports on our favorite consoles.

i completely support their efforts.

Well, yeah. They're not going to turn down easy money at what is probably an easy port from the PS3 version. All the art assets, ROM handling and such already in place...just drop and go once they get all the bugs worked out probably...not that they do that when they release a table.

CV on my iphone has been kicking out 2 balls at a time quite frequently. DRain one and it's game over for both.

The problem is you didn't bother to read anything about it at all.

We've finally succeeded in negotiating all of the licenses we'd need to digitize the Twilight Zone table and bring it to the Pinball Arcade. Unfortunately when we add up the costs of each required license and calculate what we'd have to charge for the table, we've realized that the Twilight Zone is just not commercially viable.

It's about not having to charge $10 for the table, not about them wanting money to develop it.

I have excellent comprehension skills, thanks though ;)

Maybe you missed my part about the millions of dollars in profits.

If it wasn't a viable product and market, they never would have made this new cash-cow incarnation called the Pinball Arcade in the first place. My point is that it's making money hand-over-fist, and they can easily reinvest profits from the current product line to expand upon it. It's built into the pack-sales model of the product. The freebie/cheapie licenses "pay it forward" to the costly ones. They've been making games for decades, this isn't some upstart in your mom's basement.

Be sure to donate to EA Sports next time they need to renew their Madden license... See how silly that sounds? :p

companies are in it to make money. them making a bazillion dollars over the course of the company's lifetime has absolutely zero to do with the release of TZ or this kickstarter program.

yeah...i'm not sure which system they develop for first. that would be interesting to know.

iPhone, obviously, since I still can't get Bride of Pinbot, Mideval Madness, Cirqus, or Funhouse on my PS3. :|

lol. not sure if you follow them on facebook or keep up with their updates, but on 5/10 they posted this:

Quick console update: The first 360 update will include both DLC packs. The PS3/Vita updates may include both DLC packs. They'll certainly include MM and Bride. All console updates are at least 3 weeks away from being released.

No one said that Pinball Arcade wasn't a viable product, nor did they say it wasn't a viable market. TZ DLC was not a viable product TO market due to the cost it would have if they don't raise funds through alternative means.

Comparing them to EA is a stretch. Looking at their history, Pinball Arcade is the first game they've made for themselves, everything else has been made for EA, Atari, and other larger companies, so your claiming they've millions of profit to invest sounds like a rather large assumption. It looks (to me) like they invested the money they made from previous work with other companies into PA to start.

I played this on my iPad 2 and the flipper reaction is really laggy.

Just about unplayable IMHO. Anyone else feel the same way?

Depends on the table. You really need to give it the whole thing, so if you've got stuff backgrounded, close it. RBION is usually the worst offender in my experience. I got almost all the way to Join the Cirqus on CV on my wife's iPAD without any lag/stuttering issues though.

Table and physics wierdness, that's a different story, lol.

Thanks, I will give it another go. I think the simulators are fun to get the rules and gameplay learned, before plunking down quarters in the wild. I play the Gotlieb and Wms classics on the Wii, and I have fun with those.
