i know that the origins of modern pinball started during the depression of the 1930's.
now that we are in yet another recession/depression could history repeat itself and could we see a resurgence of pinball.any thoughts?

Pinball was very different then. It was a gambling game.

In China they are making gambling pins - essentially bingos - for Latin American countries.

What was there to do in the 30's!? Listen to the radio, twiddle your thumbs, play pinball... Too many modern/home entertainment options to make pinball relevant to that degree.

no, i don't think so. we all need to hope & pray that stern doesn't go under..........i know some folks hate the "licensed" pin route, but that's what we've got.

Yeah, those fucking licensed games....Addams - piece of shit! Twilight Zone - fucking license!!! Star Trek:TNG - what the FUCK were they thinking!!?!?! Oh wait, those were Bally/Williams so it's OK!!!!!! Now...back to Stern...fucking Wizard of Oz, glarghghg LICENSES....BOO HISS...oh..wait...that's Jersey Jack, therefore it's BRILLIANT!!!!

Oh, I get why Stern gets bashed..cuz they use SHITTY licenses....Lord of the Rings, Pirates, Spider-Man, Simpsons, Family Guy, Iron Man, Avatar.....oh wait, those are the very best possible licenses one could possibly imagine for pinball!

Hmmm...

Hey, ya know what? Fuck all you anti-license motherfuckers. :)

hell, i say let the haters hate.........as long as stern keeps cranking out titles, i'll be a happy camper. :)

Rare - i agree with you (and think the same way). Stern has impressed me with their license selection for the most part (Besides 24, CSI, WOF and Rolling stones). Of course, after their bad licenses, they always seem to bounce back - Rolling stones will be followed by Tron (wow), CSI or 24 was followed by Batman and Ironman. They have done an impressive job with license, better than other companies i can think of (like toy makers, video game makers, etc). They have a good pulse on what the masses want (although i question Rolling stones!).

Now, i think alot of complaints stem from lack of NON licensed themes. We really have to put ourselves in Sterns (or even Pinball Jacks!) shoes.

It is so risky to bet on a non licensed theme - especially for a struggling media. Its a no brainer for them to keep with licenses - otherwise they lost the brand recognition edge, and bet the farm on something that no one has any attachment to. Its ok with me - so we lose out on original themes. I would rather that than lose out on Pinball completely.

im not sure whether pinballs will go up or down in the future. i WOULD place a bet on less and less people who are willing to pay $4000 plus for a game unless its a very very few certain titles.
but there will always be people who want a pinball and it doesnt matter what title just to have in their house.

ONE TIME, a year ago i got some advice that made me PONDER the people who are asking crazy money for their games, i told an older gentleman that i was trying to learn how to fix machines and i buy and sell them and he told me thats not so great of an investment. "why?" i asked. he told me that in the recession we are in and if it gets worse to a depression that people will not have money to buy a video game or a pinball machine, he said that people will need to fix their sink, or repair their toilet, fix the leak in their roof, etc, etc. now that did make sense to me but i believe there will always be enough collectors scattered around who will pay something for the games. 3500-4000 OR MORE for games (not including medieval madness, cirqus voltaire, twlight zone, and a small handful of others) i think we will see less of. people will see those prices and look elsewhere for someone else wanting to sell their same machine.

DONT GET ME WRONG THOUGH, i will still be out there looking for deals on games ALL THE TIME EVERY DAY, but i would think two or three times before i would pay over $3000 for any game..........another thing i learned is if you miss a OK deal (not a great deal) on a game there is usually ALWAYS another one that comes around

I'm struggling with my answer. I either want to reply "of course not" or "you gotta be kidding"... but not sure which one to use.

The thing with using licenses is, after a while, that's what makes them stupid. Sure, they're awesome when they come out... but after a while, the license is what makes the game old, and not the game itself.

I love the Shadow, but who the hell knows about the movie "the shadow" anymore? Some are licenses that will last a long while, such as Iron Man, Spider Man, and things like World Cup Soccer. yes, it's WCS 94, but that's not really in your face. The theme is SOCCER. That's going to last forever.

I like games with no license just as much as one with. I like Road Show, I like Who Dunnit. But the fact is, they didn't do as well when they first came out. I think it's these games that will last longer. I don't need a game theme to attract me. Pinball is cool to me because it's pinball. Hell, I love Doctor Who and have never seen a single episode of it.

Sorry, I sort of just typed there with no real point, I guess. ;)
