Pinball 2K was finally 1 Upped. Future of pinball tech.

dude...that's insanely awesome. i'd love to see a full, fleshed out game on this platform. wow.

from the article:

My goal was to create an upper playfield that doesn't get stale over time. I imagine most people will look at the symmetry of the upper playfield and assume it will get boring quickly. However, each and every shot has three or more exits. In other words, if you shoot a shot, there are at least three paths (some have five) the ball can take.

I was very careful with the shot layout and placement of a few diverters to make this shot variety possible.

My intention is to treat this machine as a platform for which we'll have a number of different game apps, and each app will make use of different combinations of shots and shot exits.

Even with all of the various upper playfield features, we've done a pretty good job building a machine that flows and doesn't feel crowded. I'm a big fan of high speed, flowing games and wanted to be able to hit back-to-back ramp and loop combos on the P3.

awesome.

Played this yesterday. Crazy possibilities. Using the plastic walls as an arkanoid type game was awesome and great fun. Their detector matrix works great for the lcd-as-playfield. Would be easy to do something like a video rollover target.

It looks like a lot of thought went into the project and it may have limited short term value, but honestly I doubt any sort of 'convertable' pinball table will hold anyone's interest for long. And I shudder to think how much the startup cost will be.

I could see Dead Hunters on the Future pinball platform coming to life on this thing.

If you dont know what Dead Hunters is you owe it to yourself to download Future Pinball and a few tables.

pinball needs a shot in the arm. i'm sure we'd all agree. some think that may be JJP...some don't.

either way, the possibilities of this platform SHOULD be promising to all of us pinball fans. something new...something innovative...something different........should get all of us pumped.

it's no longer 1993. we all need to realize that. pinball is on the verge of death. anything....and i mean ANYTHING that breathes new life into the genre should be embraced.

Pinball machines and video monitors do not belong in the same cabinet. If it's got a monitor in it then it's a video game NOT a pinball machine. Video monitors in a pinball are a complete turn off to me. I won't touch one if it's got a monitor in it.

Pinball needs to go back to it's roots with score reels, gongs, bells, chimes, roto units, etc. In fact, we need to go back to using AC powered 2" flippers. That's where real skill is involved.

to the bold....yeah, that's not gonna happen. doesn't matter if you like it or i like it or whatever, but it just ain't gonna happen. ever.

IMO, we need to embrace any progress made in the pinball field. we've only got one, MAYBE two, legit pinball manufacturers now...and i don't see that number climbing ever again. not to where it used to be. if somebody can take this new pin cab formula and make a captivating pin, i'm all for it. it's extremely not a baby-pac. it's hardly a P2K. this looks like a new, fresh take on pinball and i'm all for it....if it means more pins produced, greater chances taken, more innovation, etc, then sign me up.

Baby Pac was and is a complete abortion in my eyes. It sucked as both a video game and as a pinball. It was the worst of both!

The LCD table pictured in this thread doesn't do much for me at all, although I realize it is just a prototype and a real implementation MIGHT be much more interesting than it currently appears.

I think RFM was the ONLY attempt I've ever seen at integrating video and pinball that worked. It was a brilliantly executed design where the video integration ADDED to the game play rather than distracting from it.

I don't think this new design improves on what RFM did at all.

That line of thinking would also mean we need to get out typewriters, phone switchboards and RCA radios. I have an appreciation for any era game and old tech, but that stuff is way in the past now and that will never change. I get it though, that's your favorite era.

I don't know about this particular pinball "concept," but it could be cool. Might as well go all the way though and make the whole playfield an LCD.

I love the look, style, and sounds of the old school EM pinballs. But, the playability of them sucks compared to modern pinballs from the late 80's onwards. The EM pins were so slow they put me to sleep.

I think a high speed EM could be fun to play though.

i watched the videos. i would like to see a finished product and play it before i render an opinion.

Uhm.....this is KLOV. Everyone has an opinion. Even if it has no basis in reality :)

I'd love to see an "em" style machine designed with speed and flow in mind. Put modern coils on it but use score reels, chimes and RAMPS.

It already hes happened retro pinball has released a modern version of the 1967 king of diamonds. Score reels and chimes included. Street price of under 4k. Looks a lot more durable and fun than anything else out there. Can't wait to play it at pax east.

So with stern, jjp and retro we have plenty of choices

one. pin.

It's another video game. Baby Pacman all over again. Yuch. It looks awful.

Your comparison is not even close. The screen allows for mobile targets. I think it would be much more interesting to shoot something on the move than the same lane or ramp shot over and over.
