Pigskin 621 AD with glitchy graphics.

I'm working on a Pigskin, and aside from the monitor being pretty bad, the character sprites are flickering in and out everywhere on the screen, even on the test screens. I tried reseating all the socketed chips, but that apparently didn't help

Played around with it today, and the magenta-ish color now goes away on it's own. It's there for a second on startup, and then the monitor is fine. I guess I should do a cap kit just to check the solder joints.

I notice that the glitchy sprites has a sort of pattern. At start up, the game is *almost* fine. But, the longer it's left on, the worse it gets. Almost like something's wearing out or heating up over time.

I'm in over my head on it right now. Aside from a broke rubber on Player 2, the game's in almost perfect shape. I really want to bring it back to life, so to speak.

You said it yourself, Cap kit!

You could test with a working monitor and verify if it is actually a monitor problem or a board problem. Divide and Conquer!

I don't think a cap kit will be a cure-all. I have a good background image on the game, but all the foreground stuff is junk. I'll do a cap kit just to do it (seems to be a theme with my repairs).

I may have to try the board in another cabinet just to see what's going on

suspensions are OK but prof before action is warranted here. You really need to know for sure if it is a board issue, monitor, or connection.

Tried the board in another cabinet and the foreground graphics issue is still there. I noticed, though, that if I pressed and held the onboard RESET button, the display freezes and all the foreground stuff disappears. Of course then the game resets. I need to figure out where that switch is in circuit and compare it's location to the video drivers I guess.

Has nothing to do with the switch, The foreground circuit is what you need to look at. Voltages and roms are the first things to look at.

Leave it on for about an hour or so and see if the issue gets worse or better.

Tried resoldering the socketed chips to see if I could get a change. No luck. Here's a couple pics of where it's at now.

Try cleaning the edge connector and re seat the socked chips. If it gets worse with time it is probably a connection with a socket. Freeze spray on the chips/sockets will show which one is the problem. Re flowing the solder on the pins will NOT help if the socket is bad. Can be a number of other problems, ram, roms, and sockets.

Just an update to say how I fixed it. Chip F12 seemed hotter than the other chips on the board, and I replaced it with one from out replacement board that died yesterday (sigh). So it's up and running for the moment.

Not sure what happened to the other board we had in the game that was working. All we get when we turn it on is a white screen. No sound either.

Hopefully fixing the graphics on the board that's working now will stay fixed, and I can keep the other board for parts.
