Picked up old machine with mvs, wanting to restore. Best way to strip paint?

Hello,

I finally got my first cab. It is in ok shape, but it could be better. It currently has an mvh-mv1t in it with neo turf masters being the cart. From what I can tell it is a "Street Fighter II' - Hyper Fighting" (http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?game_id=9818). I am wondering if this is correct.
Here are a few pics of it http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a202/Syco54645/Mobile Uploads/IMG00178-20100103-2158.jpg

What do you guys think it is? I am leaning towards fixing the nicks and painting it to be a neo geo cab as I didn't much care for the street fighter games. I intend to keep the mvs in it at any rate.

Thanks

Can anyone suggest the best way to strip this cabinet? I dont think sanding will work too well... Afraid to use harsh chemicals though without asking first. There is latex paint, under that is the street fighter 2 vinyl, under that is anyone's guess.

I can't say from personnel experience since this is a hobby I'm thinking about taking up (just need to make a workspace/bench/etc in my garage), but I have done a bit of woodworking and similar hobbies/activities. That being said, if that's a metal CP, I'd wager a drill and wire brush might work out nicely since it's metal you're working with. You should be able to find them easily at any tool shop if you don't already have one. Here's an example of one: http://www.usahardware.com/inet/shop/item/25460/icn/20-720359/century_drill/76223.htm

As for the rest of the cabinet (and if the CP is wood), sanding seems to be the best option - try a belt or hand sander though. If you think the vinyl and latex is still holding together fairly well, try taking a razor blade to it and lightly scrape it off.

For both the drill/wire brush and sanding though, you will NEED goggles and mask.

For baked on overlays or art removal, many of us prefer Citristrip... works very nicely on a stubborn control panel, apply, let it sit for a while, and then scrape away.

I found the wire brush approach last night at around midnight. The cp is in fact metal. I should have thought about the brass brush before as I use a brass brush on my snowboard to remove the old wax (not on a drill though). As far as a hand sander, I picked one up at walmart and it is going back as it is junk. I am thinking and orbital would be better. Problem with working on this cab is the spec sheet says it is 375 lbs. I am going to assume that is with no board but includes the monitor. I can remove the tray inside as well as the back door to save on weight, but it is still mighty heavy. Truth be known I am rather scared to remove the monitor. Scared to discharge it (I figure I would jump and damage it when it pops) and scared to take it out for fear of damaging it. Laying the cab on its side would not be easy given its current weight. I was just going to cover the monitor and leave it in there when I do my work. If I had someone with me the first time I discharged it I wouldn't be worried at all. Also, the top of the picture has a bend to it, not the top of the screen, but where ever the picture is set at. If I shrink the image or shift it down the bend follows the image. I am going to assume that I will need to do a cap kit at some point in the future.

You wouldn't need to discharge the monitor unless you plan on pulling the chassis. to remove the monitor all you have to do is unplug the video and power wires from the chassis. Remove the bezel glass then the mounting bolts and pull out the whole thing. If you're not a big guy I would suggest having someone help you when pulling it out.

As for the Cab it is a Generic Dynamo cab. These things were made to be converted to whatever you want.

I have a similar cabinet with a single MVS as well.
Any chance you could take a few pictures of the control panel top and inside?
Mine is completely screwy and I'd like to get the proper Neo Geo layout.

I can but my cp is off right now getting worked on. I painted it black. Today I drilled a new piece of plexi for the top of it but none of the holes lined up. Tomorrow I am going to use clamps and such and make sure it doesn't slip at all. My cp has about 20 holes in it. They were all covered by vinyl and the neo geo cpo. I can take a pic of it right now though if you want. I should have my cpo by next thursday. If all goes well the panel will be ready for it by then.

I think these panels have pre-cut holes to make layout easier. But mine doesn't have the right neo layout option. Pictures without the CPO would help me more! Thanks.

You are correct, they come predrilled to make install easier. I think it is more difficult as adding 6 buttons cannot be done in a logical fashion so converting to mortal kombat would be a pain. Either way, mine was of course drilled in addition to the original. The cpo was cut so that the credit display area wasn't there and the 1 and 2 start are not in the center. Over all the layout is great for an mvs. I think the painting came out well for doing it in 9 desgree weather. Anyways, here is the pic.

Are you going to be painting your machine up as a neo geo? That is my intention. Those seem to be what I remember best from growing up. Well other than tmnt and the simpsons. Would love to have one of those 4p machines...

Best way to drill the plexi or lexan overlay is to place it on the CP and drill holes for the bolts. Once you have the holes drilled bolt it down. Drill pilot holes in the center of where the buttons and joystick are going to go. Grab a drill with a hole saw and drill through using the pilot hole to guide the arbor of the hole saw. Perfect lined up holes everytime.

Well I was afraid of cracking the plexi when drilling into the existing holes and that is why I backed it with wood. I am not using a hole saw but rather a forstner bit. Wither way the cp had no way to lay dow to have the plexi placed on top. I have the old plexi that I used as a guide, I guess it just shifted a bit. I was going to use a bar clamp to hold it down with plywood under it and just go to town trom there. If I use the original as a guide it should match up just fine.
I am just not seeing a way to set the cp down to use it as a guide, least not easily.

My panel looks a bit different in terms of the pre-made holes. I will likely follow suite with you and use a neo CPO to make a pattern and to hell with the existing holes... well thats my tough man stance, we'll see how hard it is to do. ;) Mine is painted black with red Neo-Geo side art. I'd like to find a dedicated Neo-Geo or a Candy cab if I ever get the chance.....

Well mine was drilled by the guy that owned it before (he runs an amusement business). This is not the default layout from what i can tell from the various fliers i found from the company.
