Actually, I've been looking for one of these for years, but I never see any at rummage sales or thrift stores, and ones in retail game stores and even online seem to go for about $50.00. This was never a system I had as a kid (always a Sega fanboy), and I couldn't justify spending a lot on one "just because." A friend of mine had just bought a fairly large lot of retro gaming stuff for $160, and I was able to buy one of his two SNES systems with hookups, minus a controller and game, for $10.00. (He did have two controllers, but they were both shot. I'm going to get a free one when he finds an extra he has laying around.)

I am very interested in your suggestions for SNES games. My preferences are fighters and shooters, as I have a short attention span and violent tendencies. ;)

Mortal Kombat 2 is my favorite fighter on the SNES by far. MK3 and Killer Instinct are pretty good too.

Zombies Ate My Neighbors and Uniracers are two lesser known games that are a total blast. ZAMM is like a campy version of Gauntlet and Uniracers is a badass racing game with unicycles that has a bit of a Sonic The Hedgehog twist.

I love MKII, but when you play the dedicated machine all of the time, the 16bit SNES version simply does not cut it. Shooters and fighters are not the SNES's strong-point but the system does have a lot of fantastic titles (e.g., Gradius III, Mario All Stars, Paperboy 2, Bart's Nightmare, Star Fox, Super Mario Bros 2, Alien 3, Axelay, EVO, Captain America and the Avengers, Donkey Kong Country, DK Country 2, Kirby Super Star, the Mega Man Xs, NBA Jam, R-Type, Street Fighter II Turbo, etc….etc…..etc……).

You have just bought yourself one of the best consoles of all time sir. Welcome to the club.

I was also a Sega household growing up, but I got a SNES a few years ago (a mini model). Here are some worthy titles I enjoy and others I am looking to purchase:
Actraiser
Aladdin
Axelay
Breath of Fire
Breath of Fire II
Castlevania 4
Chrono Trigger
Darius Twin
Earthbound ($$$$$$$$$$$$$$$)
Earthworm Jim 2 (best port)
Final Fantasy II
Final Fantasy III
F-Zero
Gradius III
Illusion of Gaia
Kirby's Avalanche
Legend of the Mystical Ninja
Magic Sword
Megaman X
Pilot Wings
R-Type III - The Third Lightning
Secret of Evermore
Secret of Mana
Soldiers of Fortune
Soul Blazer
Space Megaforce (classic Compile all the way)
Starfox
Street Fighter Alpha 2 (cool that they squeezed this into a 'chiped' cart)
Street Fighter II
Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts
Super Mario All Stars
Super Mario Kart
Super Mario World
Super Metroid
Super R-Type
Super Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back
The Legend of Zelda
Turtles in Time
UN Squadron
Zombies Ate My Neighbors
Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen (good luck finding it $$$$$$)
Run Saber
Robotrek (for all of the RPGs on the SNES, this one is forgotten by all)
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

Wow, that's a great list! I'm going to scour the 2nd-hand game stores for some of those. I had no idea that SFA2 was ported to the SNES. None of the Alphas came out on the Genesis.

I used to play The New Challengers on my Genesis all the time, and that's where the series stopped on the system. I wonder why they never ported SSF2 Turbo to the Genny? It wasn't really graphically improved from New Challengers, and the Genesis was still going strong. Was the Street Fighter fervor dying at that point? Was SSF2T on the SNES?

Super Turbo wasn't on either the SNES or Genesis, unfortunately. I believe there was a version on 3DO, a collection that included it on PSX, then another collection that included it on PS2. My guess is that there were already a lot of animations dropped from TNC on SNES, so adding in the extra stuff for Super Turbo might have been a stretch.

Alpha 2 on SNES is pretty impressive for what it is. I wasn't really a fan of the Alpha games until 3, but this one is pretty good imo.

Be sure to get Bomberman 2. The battle mode should satisfy your short attention span and violent tendencies.

Be sure to pick up a super game boy and a genesis to snes adapter too, always fun playing sonic 2 on a snes

Fighter must haves are MKII and SFII. Shooter must haves are Super R-Type, Gradius III & Phalanx. Branded must haves are Super Mario World, Super Mario Kart, DK Country, Zelda & Super Metroid. Capcom must haves are Super Ghouls & Ghosts, Mega Man X & UN Squadron. Konami must haves are Super Castlevania 4, Turtles In Time & Contra III

Def worth mentioning again, zombies ate my neighbros hands down.

Also starfox, tmnt turtles in time, zelda link topast mega man x,...

I still play my snes all the time. I had to get a old school CRT TV though because it didn't look very good on the LCDs had some waviness trying to display the 240p though svideo. I got a flash cart with sd to try out all the Japanese games I missed out on. A couple I went ahead and bought off eBay recently like Super Tetris + Bombliss, very addictive game. I just check Craigslist periodically to pick up carts on the cheap, wish I had a nice way to store/display the games (right now they live in a big box). Super metroid is probably one of my all time favorites so I have to recommend that one for any super nes newcomer.

Get a multicart and have all the games.
All except for: http://www.retrousb.com/downloads/incompatibilitylist.html

Regardless, I do want to pick one of these up one day. I would love to have them for all my classic systems at this point.

Rep for this list. All excellent games. If I were stuck with only a short list of games, this would be pretty much it...I would probably add an RPG or two like FF2/3 and Secret of Mana, though.

Not sure if these will be something you like but my recommendations are
Super Metroid
Super Castlevania IV
Actraiser
Contra III
