I picked this Defender up for $200 playing blind . The Wells 4600 needed a new black level pot , which I got from member local413 , and I installed it last night and was able to play a few games . Defender Rules !! Its one of the greatest video games ever ! The replay value is forever because this game is very deep and insane . One of my favorite games . The last Defender I had was a mouse house for awhile and was pretty beat up . I sold it and finally got a nice Defender .

The only problem it has is the joystick is pretty loose and sloppy . I've never messed with a Defender joystick before , is there a grommet you can replace ?

Excellent. Can't seem to come up with one here in the midwest for anything.

Just in time for Doug M's 30yr old strategy guide- http://mahugh.com/2013/01/21/defender-the-last-word/

Freaking Awesome !

I was looking for a strategy guide . I'm gonna read that whole thing .

I actually suck at Defender , my high score is 70,000 . But I'm slowly getting better and love playing it .

My strategy is kill all the Landers as fast as possible and grab one of the humans and hang on to him so the planet never blows up . I know its not the best strategy for getting really high scores but I survive the longest playing this way .

Does the original P/S work or is it on a switcher? I've found it's best to
a) rebuild all connectors, or at the very least anything power related with molex housings and crimp pins, and any header pin/strips that are tarnished
b) rebuild the original p/s and use that

Your scores will improve.. I have never thought of that strategy.. Key is knowing where to use your smart bombs, and getting fimiliar with the controls..

I just picked up a decent one myself with the silver coin door. Seller sold it to me as non-working. I bring it home, open it up and a coin mech was floating around as well as a box with a working spare sound board (and of course a bunch of quarters). I removed the items, plugged it in and it fired right up with ZERO issues. I imagine the seller moved it, shorted something with the coin mech. and figured it was dead. The boards had service stickers on them from 2010.
great game even though i suck at it too.

Its all original , so I'll check all that stuff out .

Great score... I concur with your opinion on how great it is. The thing that keeps me coming back to Defender is the sheer random mayhem. There are no patterns or levels to memorize here, and the more you play, the more crazy stuff you see.

Its actually cool to see the game do weird things, like Landers going through the top of the screen and not mutating when stuff gets busy, or watching the whole game S L O W down when you set down a shitload of humanoids. The balance of destruction, difficulty, balance and reward is perfect in this game. Its also amazing to watch someone play thats really good at it.

Have fun with it, I can not imagine parting with mine!

Good grab on the Defender. Can't go wrong with that deal. That's some wicked Ms. Pac burn on the monitor in that Joust cabinet. Damn!

I know , I need to swap out the monitor . The monitor that came with the cab was a Kortec , but the flyback went bad and they don't make that model flyback anymore . I'm probably gonna get a universal chassis for it because the tube is burn free . That cab is under construction anyways , I'm working on the control panel , filling the holes . I like using bondo outside and the weather is getting better , so I'm gonna finish it up soon .
