Pretty stoked about this one. As much as I love my Cruis'n USA, I've been hoping to get another driver in here for a while and Out Run is one of my favorites :)

Cab is in decent shape overall - usual stuff...sings in the side art, wood damage around the edges, etc. But nothing too serious. As with most Out Runs, the steering wheel emblem is gone but there are fortunately plenty of options there these days. It's also missing the gas pedal but it still works well as-is. Haven't decided yet if I'll bother replacing it or not.

Anyway, no one wants to see so many words, so here's some pics.

I scanned the steering wheel logo many years ago, so the artwork is available.

Who doesn't love Outrun?

It was the Shizzit back in the day when it came out...If you were in the arcades then, you loved it too...

While I prefer the upright, that is one cool little cab. It's almost between a full sized cab and a mini...

I always loved the feel the the steering wheel as well...

Popped the back open today (needs a new lock) and noticed that the monitor is a replacement from 2000 which explains why it looks as good as it does.

Also, does anyone have any recommendations for replacing the back fan? This one is noisy as hell so I'd love to install something a bit quieter. I cleaned it up a bit to get years worth of gunk off of it and that helped a little. I can also put in a rubber gasket or something to help absorb some of the vibration but I'm thinking I'd rather just replace the whole thing.

Make sure you check your b gear and you should probably start looking for a replacement.
So I've heard...I haven't pulled out the CP to get a good look yet but I tried to take a couple of pics...looks like one of the smaller gears is cracked but it's hard to see the others until I dig in a bit more.

One other question - should the shifter stay in L when pushed up or is it loose to where it always falls into H? I've seen pics of some with it fixed in L but I know I've played several that were loose (like mine). Maybe there's a missing spring or something?

How about the maps? Did anyone ever make one of yours into a topper that you know of?

I don't know if anyone specifically used one of the maps for a topper on a mini - I would think a plexi holder of some sort should do the trick. Would be neat to see if you end up trying it.

It should stay in the gear you put it in.

There was an official topper: http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=243220

I think someone reproduced these a while back, and I've seen the upright maps repurposed for it. I'd definitely like to have an original or close repro some day.

I'd love to give it a shot if you have one up for grabs :)

I suggest you do nothing to the gears until you find replacement parts! I forget if the cabaret has a sliding tray like the UR or if it works differently. Make sure its able to freely move. Look for other parts you might want to replace. I think there are bushings and stoppers. I am sure someone must have a rebuild thread or video. I have not messed with one in over 10 years.

your b gear is cracked. it will eventually split and fall apart. I have seen people put a band clamp on it, but If you try, that could also make it fail. That mid size gear will eventually fail as it is split. Not sure what it is referred to (I think A gear is the really big one B touches), so maybe c or d. Occasionally you see the small gear attached to the pot fail, so you might need all of them. with 3d printing, you can probably make the gears. Not sure if the B gear will hold up to that, but I sure someone has tried.

Do some research on the B gear. Maybe 10+ years ago someone made a few out of brass. It would be interesting to hear if that was a viable long term solution or if it just broke the other gears. I don't he still makes them. maybe see if arcadefixit sells something.

As for the shifter, you probably will find the housing cracked. if your lucky you will find a small ball bearing in the bottom of the cab. if you shove it back into place, the shifter will work again, but you nee to deal with the housing for a long term fix. There is no spring, its a friction issue. you will see the path the ball travels in as it will wear a mark onto the housing.

Great info, thanks! I'm looking at the 3D printed gear set that instmkr sells. It's about $75 for all four gears + springs. Steve23 also sells metal B gears but I think I'm going to try the 3D printed set for now. ArcadeFixit lists a NOS B gear but is out of stock at the moment.

Steves post is almost 10 years old. I don't think you can plan on getting one from him.

Arcadefixit often needs to be updated, but when it comes to the B gear, he probably gets asked about it all the time. So no inventory is probably accurate.

So your only real option is the 3d printed stuff. I think there is a spring that centers the sled, but I don't remember them breaking. They break all the time in spy hunter (it also wears a hole into the mount point), , but since its a kit, why not. There are some rubber pieces involved and a some bearing (or races?), not sure what they are called. So try to find it all.

I can tell you the A gear will be a real pain to pull, It seldom breaks, so you might be better off leaving it alone unless you have to. The other gears are easy to get to. Good luck with it.

Ordered a bunch of stuff yesterday. Also opened the CP from the front and took a closer look at most everything. Pulled the shifter out and everything there looks good except for the spring that holds the bearings in place - it was broken in half and thus not providing the force needed to hold the shifter in place. ArcadeFixit had one in stock so I picked that up along with some other stuff. Fortunately, the housing looked fine. For now, I put the spring back in a way that the shifter mostly stays in place, but it will work a lot better once the new one is here :)

Got a lot of parts in and have been doing what work I can here and there. I'm trying to replace the dears now with the 3D printed ones. Apparently the springs that come with it are more suitable for the material they're made out of vs the originals (originals might break the 3D printed ones I guess). Not sure if/how that will affect the feel of the steering...

Regardless, I'm trying to get in there and replace the gears but I'm having a hell of a time getting this bad boy off of there (see pic).

Both videos I've watched on disassembly have been for the standard upright which is a bit different than the mini, it seems. Regardless, I'd think this part would be the same but in those videos, this thing came off with relative ease. In my case, it won't budge...almost like there's something locking it in place but I can't see anything that might be doing that.

Anyone with a mini out there have any tips or know the secret?

Take a pic from behind. I had 2 cabarets, but I don't think I messed with the controls on them.

I think the ur has a slot in the steering shaft that holds an alignment key. Can't imagine they would change things up that much.

Maybe try leaving that side alone and see if you can free up the other side and slide the shaft out to free up those gears.
